One of the better Western-made old-school JRPGs. Better than Septerra Core, at any rate.

It's like a sci-fi turn based RPG done in the style of Chrono Trigger made in the Quake II engine.

It's cool. But don't be afraid to use a guide.

It's quite fun so far. Feels kind of janky, but I'm quite invested in the world. What is it with people wearing trench coats in sci fi media exactly?

The Matrix having released a few years earlier and having a lot of influence.

The main character is following the 'film noir' detective trope. Though, I guess in the mid 90's black trench coats were in.

Amazing atmosphere, bad gameplay

I couldnt believe how long it took to even get past the first area of the game. It feels like a jrpg developed by a complete schizoid who read too many 70s and 80s sci-fi novels. Its got some charming bits and some really cool atmosphere but it's a complete slog and I was burned out by the time you get off the first area.

When I played, it helped to use a speedup button that was enabled by a semi-official bug-fixing patch I'd installed. Running through some of the game's long, realistically sized passages was much too tedious, but with the speedup function it was fine. That probably helped with slow animations in battles too I imagine (I've forgotten the details). But if what you're burned out on is just talking to people and actually doing quests, then speedup may not be enough. Anyway, be aware that the most charming bits are probably ahead of you. It's a really cool game, aside from... much of the "game" part of it.

At first it just seems like a weird detective story. Then it opens up when I least expected it too and found myself having a laugh at a certain party member and all their quests.

the game is kind of bad but it's silly and charming and almost feels like a proto-Mass Effect and the song that plays during Stiletto's introduction is pretty good. they also knew the game was bad so they added a fast forward button, which makes it much more playable. Democratus is the best character.
