This is the one genre I'm aware of where the best games aren't /vr/ imo
The best Fire Emblems aren't even made by intsys, for example. I love SNES FE, but they get eviscerated by Vestaria and Andaron Saga, and those aren't even commercial releases.
Maybe it goes to Berwick Saga, but still, 6th gen is surprising

These are two of the best games I have ever played.
The story of Langrisser is simple, but the great pacing and legendary soundtrack make it extremely addictive to play and memorable. The maps are full of enemies and this contributes to the great epic scope of the game. The original version has permadeaths, but later versions have removed them, for the better of the game since the generals were never that many to begin with and given the difficulty of the game.
Tactics Ogre on the other hand has a more complex and overarching story. It is a "political" game. It has permadeath (although not as harsh than, say, Fire Emblem) but you can recruit generic units as well. It has some historical merits being the first SRPG to feature verticality in maps and the "non alternate turn system". Memorable for the setting, the equally legendary soundtrack, and the high difficulty.

this is retarded, i'm actually astonished you managed to contrive something this stupid. if anything, FFTA has one of the best stories in any RPG. i'd argue it has more story elements than FFT which is mostly a bunch of armchair intellectual political masturbation with no overarching moral. i'm convinced half of the criticisms this game come from mewtfags that identified with le sad lonely boy instead of based marche. the entire game is about the destructive nature of escapism, made even more poignant by the fact it's being told through an escapist medium to begin with. go ahead and say "...now that's le heckin armchair intellectual nonsense!" but it isn't, it's actually a very good story and a clever form of storytelling. what a weird thing to attack the game for.

This is a really important part of the design of these games imo. Like >>11836757 said, time pressure for main/optional objectives is the way. Fire Emblem does it sometimes with maps that ask you to save villages or NPCs for a reward, but require risk to do so. Or the entire (different) village mechanic in FE4
Then you counterbalance this with maps actually designed for defense/turtling so every map isn't strictly a rushdown

>FFTA has one of the best stories in any RPG.
>the destructive nature of escapism

For starters the entire story sound like pub philosophy, or rather what you'd hear stuck-up parents who forbid video games to their kids say "video games are le bad! Kids can't tell the difference from reality anymore!", which coming from a video game and coming from THIS video game in particular is the most hypocritical message I've seen in a video game. The game is trying to tell people "not to overdo escapism", all while having a game system that never fucking ends between the clan turf war that attack places you had liberated with no end, or sidequests that keep coming back even if you already completed them 10 times.

If you really think this story is good you must have issues with your video game playing. I don't.

But I wasn't even getting into that, when I said the story is almost inexistant what I meant was that you get a 30 secs cutscene every 10 hours.

Dark Wizard is always overlooked.
The playthroughs as the different leaders changed the game greatly.
>Amon the vampire lord campaign is raising an undead horde to conquer the world. Ghosts, Liches, death dragon, etc but weak economy (undead dont pay taxes I guess?)
>ARMER XIII his campaign has a strong economy, can hire a ton of powerful mercenaries and he can lead them in combat personally as he is a powerful unit when he leaves the castle
>crystal the mage leaders an army with powerful magic, runs smaller armies and is weak o nthe frontlines, but can nuke shit and support armies from the castle. She also wears a leotard and has nice legs
>Robin runs a well rounded campaign, she has decent magic, decent as a combat unit herself, good economy, overall balanced campaign. her unique heroes are weak though

Each ruler has two generals which are unique heroes on the battlefield. Most are decent, but one of them is a glitched isekai type cheat hero who can cast all 4 elements, and is physically stronger than anything in the game. You get her to her 4th tier promotion and she is more or less a god of destruction on the battlefield, but up to that point the vampire ruler has tough early and mid-game.

Way more depth and replay value than a shinging force or warsong(langrassier) ttile fro mthe 16 bit era.

Theres a stage in Langrisser early on where you have to cross a bridge to rescue some general and I had to re-do it 10 times to actually get the general to not kill himself in 4 turns before I could even get across the bridge to save him. I would literally order my guys to move the farthest possible every turn and he would die before I could even approach the enemy that kills him.

On top of unique units that get stronger over time, you can hire generic mercenaries with fixed stats which will gather exp from defeated units to their assigned commander.

Same.
Its very underrated and I am glad I decided to give it a go.
I can understand the art style is probably not the most appraling but works well with the story.
It's pretty secret heavy (Most extra content is hidden in random tiles. Even the best ending) so better guide up.
And now that there is a mod where the gameplay is similar to the average srpg, you have a game with 2 gameplay styles.
Best retro game I have found in a while.

Yeah bro, glad to see more people come around to it. I played it when it came out and remember trying to talk to my friends about it and they were having none of it

I just remember it being insanely dry compared to VH1.

It is a bit dry compared to VH1, VH1 has the feel of a Saturday morning cartoon so it's a tough comparison.

Front Mission is probably the most underrated tactical JRPG. I never played it but looks the coolest out of all.

Whats funny is say how FFT and TO looks a little too cutesy in their spritework compared to the themes they touch but the game with the correct presentation that matches the atory gets lookee down upon.

So should I play normally or with the "normal" turn mod?

I have only played in the normal way with the new battle system.
Anons say its easy to read the AI but maybe I'm dumb but other than bosses without any other enemies, I have misread a bunch of AI cues.
So maybe play normally and if you think its too easy, switch to the modded one.
Though I'm not sure if saves are compatible.
