don't think I've seen one of these in a bit, but I've been feeling nostalgic for old rpgmaker games.
Do you remember playing any good ones? what were your favorites?
I recently played yume nikki again after like 15 years and it felt very nostalgic

I've been playing it for the first time recently - despite loving yume nikki and playing fangames for years I just never got around to it. It's really fucking good, I am shocked that it manages to be its own thing and have its own surprises instead of being derivative garbage like most YNFGs.

I loved playing random RPG Maker 2k and 2k3 games when I was younger. Legion Saga 2 was really cool. I think the first RPG Maker 2k game I ever played that wasn't Don's Adventures was some game called "Reality Breakdown." It was very amateur and very silly but I played all the way through. I've been tempted to make a youtube video on it because seeing random little things that I once thought was neat disappear forever is sad.

Yume Nikki? In my /vr/? I wonder if its because of the anniversary making everyone realize just how old this game is...

As per the question, i adore 2kki and some other ynfgs that came after, they are a pretty unique experience in gaming.

Final fantasy XI just got an RPG maker game that is very impressive and claims to be 100+ hours. I donโ€™t know about that, but I have to commend the author for at least getting all of the classes in there.
I played Phantasy Star III2k by the same guy who made A Blurred Line and that game was okay I guess. I didnโ€™t like the combat system for example, it was way too different from the original game, but thatโ€™s RPGmaker 2k for you. Iโ€™m more interested in the more recent remake of PS3 but it looks like itโ€™s not entirely finished.
Speaking of which the best RPG maker game is Don Miguelโ€™s built in RPG

At the time it was a big deal because around 2006-2009 people were playing more sophisticated computer games besides flash. You started seeing the rise of the pretentious game. Indie game was synonymous with pretentious and that leads to Yume Nikki. It was easy to download and install. It was easy to play. It was fun to just wander around and see weird stuff because it looks like someone actually put thought into it. But itโ€™s an old game and as far as game design goes, something like this would not catch on, it would be dismissed as lazy.
I liked it a lot when I was in college, but I had a pretty shitty laptop that couldnโ€™t play many games. To this day I really canโ€™t tell you what the game is even about. You really didnโ€™t miss much.

I second this. Quit the game after 15 minutes of dicking around. And trust me, I've played a lot of RPG Maker games, most of them proper RPGs, and while many of them were half-baked, they were still much more enjoyable than this pretentious p.o.s.

I wouldn't say it's overrated, it's actually pretty influential and for a reason. There's not many games like it and a ton of the games (usually rpgs) that came after it cite it as an inspiration, often as much if not more than the mother series.
It's unironically like calling citizen kane overrated.
Yeah everyone in film loves to suck the movie's dick 24/7 to the point where it's annoying, but it did a lot of important things for the first time that every movie after copied.

you just walk around looking at the cool visuals and relax. The creator has a nice artistic vision/style you don't really see in other games, and you can come up with your own theory about what certain scenes in the game mean. A lot of the visuals/places in the game combined with the music feel very kino to me.
The game also isn't just about an heroing, and even that part is disputed since the creator is on record saying it's supposed to be a positive experience.
imo you don't actually suicide since the stairs just appearing make no sense, I think it's supposed to be about you waking up to reality rather than living in your imagination/escapism like the creator.

I still have no idea if A Blurred Line was based on a book or short story that the creator read or not, but it sure did feel like it. Was a bit of a clunky game but I thought Talan was "literally me" and thus cool as an 11 year old, with the fall-from-grace protagonist angle.

Correct. It's not an RPG and the games similar to it as well as other non-games (horror shit, walking simulators) have done nothing but damage the image of the engine.
It's ironic because there is a small subset of "miruge" which are effectively movie games with zero actual interaction beyond clicking through text boxes, but because they actually employ the full spectrum of other features the engine has to offer and don't even pretend to be a game (therefore avoiding the curse of "good story with dogshit gameplay"), they are actually better off for it because the creator is effectively directing a small film at that point.

Ah, another fellow connoisseur, I see. Even if it's very rough around the edges, A Blurred Line is a certified rm2k classic. But the real deal for me is pic related. The story it presents is one of the greatest in the genre and I too wonder, if it's a completely original creation or based on something else.
>>11841740
Because it isn't, and you can't convince me otherwise. Pretty much any other generic jarpig craps over Yume Shitty.
>>11841761
Yet another man of culture I wholeheartedly agree with. But I'd rather go through a "good story with dogshit gameplay" than a slop with no combat at all. Then again, I understand it's difficult to integrate a story within the ramifications of a video role-playing game.

Also, RPG Maker PSX came out in English in October 2, 2000, so it wasn't that long after that Don Miguel translated RPG Maker 2k. I switched from the PSX version to 2k, and I think most people interested in making games to share would too.

Shame though, I really like the default assets for PSX version.

There was this old rpgmaker maker game. Could've been using 2003 or XP, I can't remember. All I remember is that the game was one of the wordiest things I've ever seen. I think even npc dialogue addressed how verbose the dialogue was. It would read like a thesaurus.
