So back in the 80's some devs got together and managed to create an incredible 3D-ish action game called Wing Commander. Highly impressive for the time, blew everyone away. Everything was perfect, except they had an error they could not resolve. No matter what they did, no matter what they tried, the game would spit out some horrible sounding error message when you quit the game. The error didn't actually seem to effect anything, but it sounded really bad and it was a no-brainer that customers would be freaking out if they saw it. They were losing their minds trying to get it resolved, knowing the longer it took to fix, the longer before they could release their hot new game and get some money for it.
Finally, with the deadline bearing down on them, they decided to cheat. They searched around looking for the error message, then changed it to read "Thanks for playing Wing Commander!" Fixed, ship it. People never suspected anything was off, and a post-exit message became a common thing for DOS games to have instead of just dumping the user back at the command line.
