Shitty meme console that is only popular for being zoomers first exposure to SNES games. Throw away the ports and no one would remember it. Picrel is the king.

Ecks vs Sever Ballistic is probably one of the bests despite having a couple of really shitty missions. It has Goldeneye/Medal of Honor style manual aiming and a headshot system, really fun

I love the movie even tho it’s pure cheese. I had no idea it was an fps until someone posted about it hear a year or so ago. I should’ve picked it up, we used to have a ton of them used at GameStop. Now it’s priced ridiculously. I’ll have to try and emulate it sometime. How did some rando action movie that probably should’ve gone straight to dvd get such a great fps on a console not known for fps. Wild

there's a single game that cracked the code of gba fps performance. it runs as good as any doom clone on the ps1 if not slightly better. I wonder if the devs had a particular trick or if it was just a matter of sacrificing complexity.

They are what they are. Doom 2 was a passable way to have Doom 2 in your pocket.
Some people really like Duke Nukem Advance, but I thought it was just kinda ok, it's not even remotely as good as Duke Nukem 3D.

They're ok. I've heard that Ecks Vs. Sever is supposed to be the best one, which is funny considering it's a tie-in for a movie widely regarded as exceptionally awful.

Also, the Game Boy Color will actually colorize Metroid 2 for you, and not just in the quick and dirty 4 shades way which the Super Game Boy typically does, but differing palettes for differing objects. Does a decent job of it, IMO:

Did you play through the entire game... There is a level near the end, I think the penultimate one, where it becomes a slideshow due to how many enemies there are, and generally the framerate can easily get lower when there are a lot of enemies around

Playing Doom on a gba back in the day was not my first experience with the game, but it is how I started playing on ultra violence (which is called nightmare on the port for some reason). People can bitch about muh potato controls but I would have never gotten good at fps games down the line if I hadnt poured time into such a dumb little handheld port when I was younger.
Didn’t play duke advance until much later. Its cool it has its own levels but overall not interesting. If you need more duke 3d the beach party expansion is where its at.

That's all of the fps games though, duke, doom, bond all get fairly choppy in later levels.
Duke advanced for example just completely stops rendering projectiles when there is too much going on (which I suspect the devs realized and is why you mostly only fight hitscan enforcers in the last episode despite them introducing those stationary plant things with projectiles). Dark arena was easily the best performing of the bunch, although, I can't speak for those ecks dee games having not played them yet.

fair enough but the base state of the other fps excluding maybe eks is chugging, even with just a couple enemies, you never cruise like you do in level 1 of dark arena.

Okay yeah. IIRC the Ecks games had consistent framerate though

I've been playing Nightfire and frames skip when there are more than 3 enemies at once, which is precisely when you need precise aiming too

Jesus christ Nightfire is way too fucking hard, it's so insane I feel like I'm missing something. A single enemy gone wrong can easily win game over and of course the game spawns them in packs at this point and likes to spawn them in your back constantly. The only one I can win is by learning the enemy placement by heart and exploiting as much as possible and of course each mission is divided into 3 sub missions but if you fail in sub mission 3 you start over from 1.

And I'm playing on ormal there is a HARDER difficulty on top of that, what the hell

Yeah that’s why you’re on /vr/, to shill for the handful of retro games (OOT, super metroid) that are still liked by casuals.
Janky games that have interesting ideas is like half the reason to play retro in the first place.

GBA and PSP shared the same philosophy: Let's just make shittier mobile versions of games you already played on a larger screen.
Thankfully Nintendo wised up with the DS, Sony still didn't get it and the Vita was quite gay.

>but it is how I started playing on ultra violence (which is called nightmare on the port for some reason).

I just gave it a try and it feels to me that GBA Doom's "nightmare" does not correspond to the og's "Ultra Violence". There are more enemies, you take a shit ton of damage too, and item placement seems to differ slightly (not sure). Maybe some Doom nerd around here can confirm.

also playing it on my ez flash cart I'm getting visual glitches in level 2, I wonder what's up with that I doubt it's from the port itself maybe something's wrong with my SD card, ROM, or compatibility with the game

Duke, not so much. Lacked kickass music in levels and the boot.
Worst one was Medal of honor and I still feel mad about it.
