What's the best 2D bomberman game? I personally like Bomberman '94 and Super Bomberman 5 the best

I mean, I agree with you 94'/Mega and Super Bomberman 5 in my opinion are the peak.

I've heard a lot of people say Saturn Bomberman is their favorite too; what exactly makes it good?

Bomberman 93 is my favorite, as it's early enough in the series that you don't get a lot of quality of life upgrades, making it much more difficult, but it's late enough that the graphics are beautiful, the levels are starting to become more interesting than just rectangular grids, and boss battles are actually interesting. It's the best of the early series (pre-Super Bomberman). Because it's much harder to get overpowered, and because the game punishes you much harder if you lose your powerups, the game almost forces you to learn how to 1CC it, and beating it feels way more accomplishing than other bomberman single player campaigns.

Super Bomberman 2 and Bomberman GB 3 are also favorites. The latter game is severely underrated too.

I will always have a soft spot for the Famicom one because that's the first one I beat

Those and Saturn Bomberman are the peaks of the series.

Same. I like the punch a lot and I think it has the best music.

Super Bomberman 1 just feels kinda barebones compared to 3/4/5. Not bad, just lacking features in comparison to the future entries.

Saturn Bomberman has good graphics and up to 10 people in multiplayer (8 without restrictions), these two things are its claim to fame. Singleplayer is indeed among the best of the 2D Bomberman games, it's just a fun romp with 2 player co-op, decent pacing, levels packed with gimmicks and eyecandy, though I think the multiplayer isn't quite as good as Super 3-5 if you're not going to max out the player count. A serious contender for the worst and least satisfying Power Glove in the series.

Funny how everyone lauds Saturn for having 10-player multiplayer, when Atomic Bomberman did the same thing on PC that same year (going by NA release, that is)

....but I guess doing actual "10 player" (no CPU players) multiplayer on a PC game with no online features would be kinda hard. Pretty much only something that could be done at a large LAN party.

>bomb explosions were the color of the bomber whose bomb they belonged to
This was easily the best thing Atomic brought to the table.

That and the voice lines. Despite the game being literally just battle mode and nothing else, it was pretty fucking kino.

I guess it's just baffling that it didn't become the standard for battle mode thereafter. It's a small detail but in a game so steeped in fundamentals as Bomberman, every little bit of extra information helps in making quick assessments of the play field.
