What is the best Rayman game and why is it Hoodlum Havoc?

This game fucking sucks. Rayman 2 had fantastic level design and a very chilled out atmosphere with lots of ambient music, gentle little sound effects, subdued characters with charming personalities, and would constantly switch between whimsy, creepiness and light slapstick humor without ever feeling forced.

Then Rayman 3 came along, and it was like a parody of early 2000s platformers. It bought into the whole 'tude trend, going so far as to give Rayman faggy "spiked" hair and making everything over the top without any reverence for coherence. Just look at Murphy: in R2 he was basically your Navi and would whisper little hints into your ear, he was subtle and mysterious. Then, in R3, he turns into a flying comedian that's constantly breaking the fourth wall with fucking Star Wars and The Godfather references and other jokes that aged like absolute cum. The gameplay took a nosedive too, because they got rid of the ability to shoot energy balls and replaced it with the boring standard fist attack and a small handful of powerups that turn your hands into retarded shit like bear traps, to say nothing of the garbage level design and the amateur hour bossfights.

The whole game is just a fucking mess.

Played it as a kid and loved it but i remember and it was scary as fuck, specially the levels in a kind of egyptian dungeon.


That level scared me so much that I had to ask a cousin who was older than me for help.

The game in general has a very dark and hopeless atmosphere compared to Rayman 1 and 2.

Honestly, I didn't finish either one. Sunshine was alright to begin with, but the levels all looked the same and I frankly hate islander aesthetic. Galaxy had a cool gimmick with the focus on physics and asteroid-hopping, but wagglen grates on me and it got pretty gay real quick with Mario in his bee suit climbing honeycombs and other shit like that. I legitimately think Wario World was the best wahoo between those two eras. Mainline 3D Mario platformers have never really been my jam.

I don't know, man. Michel Incel was involved in both games (I think) but I'm not sure if the dudes working on the code, art direction, etc., were the same. I'd say probably not given the content and presentation. I find it hard to believe that Michel would put his rubber stamp on that shit for anything but a paycheck, because it's a complete 180 in tone and quality from R2. My guess is that some corpos saw the success of R2 and said "this was great, but we'll take it from here" and created a sequel tailored to the trends of the era rather than trying to produce a suitable followup. That seems like a blatantly obvious assertion at this point, but still.

I've provided plenty of justification for why R3 sucks, you just don't happen to agree with it. That's fine, you prefer "what if Rayman... but with shitty pop culture references lol" to the absolute ludo known as Rayman 2. I don't. The aesthetic insults were so egregious that the changes to gameplay, good or bad, are mostly irrelevant to me -- and even then, the more linear levels, increased focus on bauble collecting, shitty healthbar-based bosses and circumstantially-useful fist powerups in lieu of cool 3D ranged energy orb combat only add further insult to the injury.

I also find it strange that you'd try to use this one true scotsman bullshit about being muh true gayman fan over R2's lack of anal fisting as an argument, when R2 is far more analogous to R1 in tone and gameplay than R3. I don't recall any Star Wars references in R1. I don't care about being a "fan", that's the most faggoty thing you could use as an argument. I care if a game is good or not. Rayman 2 is a good game, from its aesthetics down to its mechanics.
