This is why it was great to be into PC gaming at the time. Most genres stayed 2d until around 2002. And we still got those 3d games, too.

Hey guys welcome back to Video Game Estooooooterica I got a fun and exciting new video today though before we get too involved I'd ask you to hit that like button or maybe subscribe it helps the channel out a lot if you doooo. I have always loved what Sega did with the Saturn and the way I see it the industry just was not ready for 3D graphics and the 3D games of that era, although I loved them, just look like a metric craptonne of ugliness. And this is whats so amazing about a game like Mega Man 7 is you get all of the graphics, all of the gameplay and all of the sound. Speaking of sound lemme give you a quick sneak peak of the audio for Mega Man 7 and tell me what you think [disappears for 5 minutes to pad out video]

I hate this meme that "5th gen wasn't ready for 3D"
Do people really like platformers and fighting games that much (90% of 2D games are one of those)
Imagine wishing for an alternate reality where instead of playing Resident Evil, Tenchu, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid etc you just get more Marios

And that decade had some great 2D games like Metal Slug X, Worms Armageddon or Castlevania SotN for example, so they're bitching for no reason

The best thing with 5 Gen is the mix 2D/3D ,a diversity of experience like no other generation (4G lack 3D games,6G lack 2D games)

This. We all got hyped up Everytime a new console came out because each iteration actually brought extensive upgrades to the capabilities of the systems. The 3d capabilities were good enough to blow people's minds. I don't think op understand because he never lived in a world where 3d wasnt everywhere. Movies didn't usually use 3dfx until the 90s and the ones that did, it was very noticabley bad. I remember watching final fantasy the spirits within and thinking it was nearly real, just because it was so much more advanced that what we had really seen before.

Yes, you can never have too many platformers. But the death of the genre came in 6th gen, not 5th. 5th gen consoles did get platformers, and some top tier SNES platformers were released during the 5th gen.
I was pissed off about the lack of 2d games during 6th gen, not 5th.

What do you mean "the industry was not ready for 3D graphics?" Did you think game developers were just going to magically become good at 3D graphics by waiting a decade before working on a 3D game? They had to start somewhere.

Yea I loved playes Rock n Roll Racing, Biker Mice from Mars, Top Gear 1/2/3 and Super Mario Kart (this one is actually 3D idk), but racing is one of those genres that really improved going to 3D
And I actually prefer 2D platformers over 3D most of the time so I'm not complaining about having too many of them, but I'm glad Crash 1/2/3 and Tomba 2 (never played 1) existed instead of getting even more 2D ones

Yeah this is the thing about the Saturn, it was a 2D powerhouse so it was awesome from a modern perspective of the sprite graphics appreciator but it was the wrong console at the time in every possible way.

Also the PS1 could do 2D also so it was just a badly designed console, I still love it though.

The point is, these experiences could be replicated on 2D hardware. Metal Gear Solid could have easily been a top-down 2D game, thatโ€™s exactly how it plays.
