there's NO WAY this level wasn't stitched together in 1 week from leftover assets, this is hands down the worst final level in any mario game and i'm surprised it made it to retail

this game is so clearly unfinished and it wasn't even a launch title, how did nintendo fuck up this badly?

Don't forget the Bowser boss fight makes Mario 64's Bowser fights look like masterpieces and like they really strained themselves, which you also can understandably cut slack due to older/weaker technology

so much this

it's honestly a shame, this game could have been the definitive sequel to super mario 64 but instead we got a half-baked product and hardware wasn't even an excuse this time

My guess is that dropping the already developed Delfino Express to make a proper hub world ended up completely fucking up the development cycle. I wonder if we will ever get to know why they even did that, did the devs think they would be allowed to delay shit whenever they wanted like in the 64 era?

There's a fun game in Sunshine but the progression and structure is its deepest flaw.
The shine sprites give the false impression of open progression. Whilst they do unlock new nozzles and open new area, they hide the actual progression of just catching Shadow Mario on the 7th episode of every area.
Which is a shame, because it means all of the shine collecting you're doing is ultimately meaningless busywork, aimlessly playing the game until the final level suddenly opens up without the player actually understanding why. As compared to 64 or Galaxy which are truly open-ended with which levels and objectives you can choose to play or ignore in an any% scenario.

The blue coins are a symptom of the problems, they actually offer nothing at all but account for a whole fifth of the collectible shine sprites. Hunting them is also aggravating because there's no collection tracker for them, and some only appear on specific episodes. The pixel-hunting aspect of "try spraying every little thing" gets really bad because they don't leave behind any evidence you've found it (think like the Koroks in Breath of the Wild).
The worst example of this is having to stand atop a specific mushroom in Pianta Village, and spraying a hidden panel in the sky where you can see the full moon. There's absolutely no hints or indication of this blue coin and pure frustration to try and find this one on your own.

The problem with you people is you'll never be happy. You're either bitching because the game is too hard and cryptic or it's too easy and handholdy. There's no appreciation for either. If you decided you wanted to play and have fun instead of bitch and moan you wouldn't need these ridiculous write-ups to express your "feelings".

Not what I meant, I know the map tells you how many blue coins you've collected for a given area, but it lacks a lot of vital information.
It doesn't tell you the maximum blue coins per area is 30, and it doesn't tell you if you've discovered all of the blue coins for a given area or individual episode, and the player can therefore waste time trying to find something.

>>11841205
You've got it wrong, this is complaining about actual, bad experiences with the game.
Sunshine is a miserable game to play to 100% completion, but fun to just play through casually.
As compared to 64, Galaxy 1+2, Odyssey, 3D Land, 3D World, which are actual joys to 100% because they don't drag their heels with pixel-hunting hidden object bullshit.
Sunshine also fumbles the casual playthrough experience because of its vague progression goals masquerading as open-ended progression.

I'd argue this applies mostly to EAD. They had some good games, but the quality of their flagship franchises really took a big hit compared to the N64 entries.
I see the gamecube as a console of smaller nintendo franchises like Metroid, F-Zero and so on and less of Mario and Zelda. EAD's best CGN game was probably Pikmin 1 or 2 or Luigi's Mansion which says a lot.

Come on, anon. Stop being such a pussy about this stuff. You said outright "there is no collection tracker for them", so I proved to you there was. It's perfectly serviceable. You can make inferences to know how many will be in each location. You don't need a japanese man to autistically spell it all out for you unless you are a literal retard.

Sorry to hear you're retarded. Blue coins are completely inoffensive, they're a completely optional collectible. If you don't like them, then don't get them but you can't cry about them just because you're less intelligent than a 4 year old.

Always been real odd to me that people whine about blue coins whenever Sunshines brought up but don't complain about similar collectibles in any other game. I don't get what makes them so horribly different. I agree tracking them could be better, and the few that are only available in certain missions isn't great(its a lot less than you think its almost not a problem) but on the whole they're harmless.

Searching for them in the different episodes is fun and you get to see the differences between each level as you explore. Telling me how many I've gotten in each area is more than enough. You don't even get that in OoT with gold skultullas. It's literally just a picture of a gold skultulla when you've gotten all of them in that area, but you don't even know what all the "areas" are until you've gotten them all.

How? Pianta village has two coins that are only available in episodes 1, 3, 5, and 7. One that is only in 2, 3, 6, and 8. Three that are only in episode 3. Three that are only in episode 5. Eight that are only in episode 6. And one that is only in episode 8.

How can you possibly know that without scouring the same level 8 times?

NTA but Odyssey had an art direction where Mario would feel "out of place" to the locations he is visiting. Like the realistic Dragon from the Ruined Kingdom, the T-Rex and New Donk City, among others. My guess is that he's implying a big part of this design philosophy was to hide that they were just throwing shit together willy nilly?

Or has your brain been so thoroughly mushed up by the slop you consume that you thought the game flowed well from "realistic jurassic island" to "pink cake land" to "dark souls dragon"? mario has consistently traveled to wildly different settings in mainline games. the only difference with odyssey is that some of them have a more "realistic look" with a different art style, instead of them all being equally cartoony. he's done forests, caves, space, castles, robots, deserts, volcanoes, various food worlds, snow, water, ghost houses, clouds, tiny, huge, and the list goes on and on. somehow the art style changing with the setting is a step too far for you? pathetic.

and toads giving tutorials, just like that thing they do in most games? its kind of their theme.
