What are the best versions of Dragon Quest I-III? SNES? GBC? NES? Looking for the best experience for a first playthrough of the trilogy.

GBC has the most content but you might as well walk through walls to access the extra extra dungeon because accessing legit is impossible (locked behind a rng mechanic)

Snes has the best graphics

No reason to play nes

Just play the NES versions, all the other versions were casualized for already simple JRPGs. Keeping it pure.

Yeah, I was leaning towards the GBC version. I heard about the SNES fansub being questionable but wasn't sure if it was overblown or not. Graphics are not really an issue, otherwise I'd just play the version that can't be discussed on this board.

NES versions look great and play great. GBC versions look weird. SNES version looks better but still has that input delay that the NES has so it's not a worthwhile upgrade.
Just play the originals.

Every version made after the NES were made easier so it depends what you're looking for. Do you want the challenge and grinding or do you want something more carefree? So it's either NES or SNES.

Either way for a first playthrough avoid the GBC versions, and in general handheld versions of RPGs, the audio and visuals are an important part to the enjoyment of an RPG and handhelds ports are always a huge downgrade in that regard. They also have a smaller FOV which makes overworld exploration a pain unless you're already familiar with them.

You don't need to. The AI is for the most part quite competent, while the remakes actually dumb down the party AI because Japan thinks it's hilarious to watch the Priest keep wasting MP on instant-death spells.

There are no "best versions." The different releases are substantially different from each other to be considered different games. To see the full picture, you need to play all of them.

Pic related.
Get 2 bronze medal from each monster and then an NPC will change 2 bronze for one silver, just don't get all the gold medals or the new boss will fall asleep and won't fight you anymore.

SNES version is one of the most beautiful looking and sounding 16 bit games ever. who cares if the NES version is harder, its a jrpg. youll have to grind less and cleric becomes kind of pointless since you have a bag now and herbs are cheap. oh no, who cares. its worth it for the massive boost in presentation. anything other than NES or SNES is objectively wrong though, but it was badass having that huge rpg on the go back in the day. one of my most cherished gbc carts (dragon quest monsters 2 taras journey was also amazing)

The SNES version is fire AF it's basically the story of the originals but without the crusty ass graphics of the NES. I recommend the remakes on switch more but SNES is better than nothing. As a bonus you can run the emulator faster to speed through all the grinding if you go ultra classic. You will want to check out a rom hack though since the game was mistranslated as Dragon Warrior back in the olden days. Easily my favorite games and some of the best jrpgs ever

Removing all the "kerzap zablooey poopypoo" spell names and putting in cool old-timey English was not an error. It was the correction of an error. Sometimes Japanese artists get lost in their awful aesthetic tunnels and need to be gently led back out by people who have not lost track of the sane parts of the world.

doing olde english in NES games, let alone JRPGs, was an incredibly questionable/stupid idea. it just makes everything take twice as long since youre mashing through ~ twice as much text. ffs, in DW1, the princesses name, alone, takes up almost a whole line of text

its pretty clear why that style of localization fell out of favor. not only does it usually drift pretty far from what the actual script is, but its also just dumb af from a gameplay PoV

Except it came back with the new localizers that took over since DQ8 and made it even more of a problem with other ridiculous accents being added.

I genuinely think the accents in DQ8 is one of the rare instances of a game in which that works. It totally sucks in the DS remakes though.

I'm totally biased against 8 though, I think the game is pure soul and I am really not into 6th gen jRPGs

I've done and it's super tedious and the new exclusive dungeon is very disappointing. Also by the point you have all the medals you will probably have close to max stats in everything that matters so the new boss is just a box to check.
The whole medals/new dungeon thing falls into the "not worth it" category which so many extra dungeon of RPG ports/remake fall into.

Well saro is a really good character I the nes version. In the bonus stuff he is much more of an edgy try hard. I think the nes version does a great job of making sure characters show personality. Maybe I am more comfortable with reading the simple characterizations than having tropes repeated over and over at me. It is a pretty short game, much shorter than dq3 for instance. It doesn't need cutscenes
