Any unspoken retro rules you have when engaging with older games than yourself?
My rule of thumb is: if I get 30 game overs in any game I play, I will stop playing it forever. I take 30 game overs as a perma death.
It makes playing on my last game before the 30th game over really stakey
Another rule I have is absolutely no real hardware.

Yeah, my life rule is no sex with really hot actresses or other female celebs. It's a big sacrifice, but I manage.

Real hardware only. If I cant get the game physically on cartridge or disc, I dont bother with it. If its on magnetic media, I will copy it to a new disk/cassette. Basically, if I cant play the way I would have in the 80s and 90s, its not for me. For modern and retro, I try and avoid anything requiring the internet to access these games (or mandatory online check/installation BS). I would prefer just having a box I plug smaller boxes into and playing in peace.

Mostly just modern digital-only shit. Sometimes I will make an exception for very small indie games with no DRM type shit, like Cave Story. For anything retro, its more so just a matter of not having it now, but some day I plan to acquire it and I will play it then. If we are talking about something absurdly expensive, its usually not something I care about. Like I got to play a NWC1990 cart at a competition in the early 2000s at a came convention, but I have no current desire to boot it up on an emulator or flash cart and im certainly not planning on buying a cart.

not retro, but if I look up the list of achievements for a PS3 game before beginning and it requires me to go online to a non-existent server to get some "play with 2 people" achievement, i basically don't even want to touch it

If I'm playing a game and I'm not having fun then I stop playing. I don't need to beat a game to know I don't like it. However if someone makes a really good case for a game I might try it again, sometimes I change my opinion of the game but most of the time I don't.

you might be surprised that zoomers regularly play games they don't like to share stories of how frustrating they are, or as a sort of challenge, or because they saw an influencer play it for whatever reason.

I've spent a bit of time with friends my age and up looking at bad stuff just to laugh at it a bit. I didn't play it, but someone else did and streamed it, showcasing something which was particularly bad, venting a few frustrations, highlighting and laughing at especially bad design, etc.

Not often, by any means, but a few times.

i don't buy games with batteries that aren't easily replaceable. so like genesis is a bit of a pain to do the batteries on, I skip out on those.
any game that goes unplayed for over 6 months gets sold, no reason to have it if i'm not playing it consistently (I don't play jrpgs)
cartridges/hucards loose only
discs CIB only
I do real hardware, hard copies only, haven't missed out on anything cause of it, cause I keep it to 25-30 games a console at most.
stay away from anything past the NES nintendo wise, nintendo tax just ain't worth it, like i'm not gunna get a snes just for DKC3 and Megaman X.
hard wired controllers only, i usually go with japanese ones cause I keep my consoles close by, so the short cord is actually convienent.

The definition of "cheater" is someone who breaks the rules. If not using those things isn't a rule, using them isn't cheating. Since we know using them is cheating, then not using them is a rule.

original hardware should be passed down to younger generations, they need to develop sharing, patience and fine motor skills, loading the cartriges, pushing buttons in combination, multi tasking etc
if you havent reproduced offspring and still own retro consoles its time let go / give back and if you have 100 consoles stacked in a room to drive up the prices then you have 99 problems

NTA but just modern stuff. my rules with digital only stuff is...
>no extra launchers or additional DRM (steam is the only DRM i'm willing to put up with and i'm even slowly moving away from that too).
>nothing that creates security vulnerabilities on my computer.

>if I look up the list of achievements for a PS3 game before beginning and it requires me to go online to a non-existent server to get some "play with 2 people" achievement, i basically don't even want to touch it
what's funny about this is there's a game that 100% singleplayer only but has a multiplayer achievement as a joke (you still get the achievement regardless).

Like to use the original control even if it might be bad just to bring me back to the time, Grey N64 controller. Will use Neo Geo kidney joystick just to pretend I'm some ultra rich guy from 1991 even if new sticks are available.

If I can't make any progress on a boss in 2 days of play throughs I'll just look up a speedrun, had to do it in Castlevania.

Rather have real consoles instead of a mister, I know its accurate but I still know in my mind that one is using transistors laid out by a guy in Japan in the 80's.

Will use savestates at the beginning of worlds in SMB 3 because allstars did it.

If its a game I really like and I feel like I'm finishing it too quick I'll restart and put it on a harder difficulty

I'll like to play earlier games first, I'll judge launch game far less harshly.

I'll let the intro play if I'm playing for the first time that day
