are you people seriously going to pretend that you totally knew all about DBZ 4 years before the first english release, in a year when probably none of you had internet? absolute best case scenario, you had an anime shop at your local mall or something and maybe you saw some posters or even an imported japanese manga once or twice and had no clue what you were looking at

md5: bad1d5a3f663f5f17c7c073aea95d813๐Ÿ”
Nobody in the US knew about Dragonball Z in 1992. We were barely getting a few random dubbed episodes of the ORIGINAL Dragonball around that time.

On top of that Super Sonic was not common knowledge among gamers back then either. I remember my cousin telling me about the "rumor" that Sonic turns into some super powerful gold version and it just sounded like one of the many other such fake secrets back then.

Very few people in the US would have known about both Super Sonic and DBZ back then, much less also know about Super Saiyan Goku.

That's pretty funny. I can see how, the Special Stages in 2 are a pain when you're kids. Wasn't my experience though, even before unlocking Super Sonic myself there were kids in the neighborhood who knew how to get him. Plus one kid showed off the in-game cheats and Super Sonic with them. Including the debug mode where you could turn Sonic into stuff like rings and objects to place on the stage, which was memorable.

I remember watching the Freeza fight undubbed on a local Asian TV channel. The American show was still earlier in the Namek Saga (and looping back to the beginning so it took forever to finish).

Seeing Namek falling apart and Super Saiyan Goku fighting Freeza while the weird (to me) original music played was awesome.

I never knew Bulma was dying of brain aids and Vegeta being an artificially made superweapon brokered by a space-faring demon, not to mention Bulma getting shot by some Red Ribbon henchie.

You're right, I googled and apparently DB only came to Brazil in 96
But we also got new consoles later than usual so I think most people saw them at about the same time
So I can't really comment on OP's question of "how people reacted in 92", sorry I didn't pay attention
In my experience (around 96) people didn't comment on it, maybe because it was kinda obvious

I remember how it all happened. In 1994, police received a call from an anonymous whistleblower telling them the frightening truth: Super Sonic was based on super saiyan Goku from Dragonball Z. A scrupulous forensic analysis of 5 minutes of the TV show concluded this was, indeed, real. American people found out about the coverup they haven't seen from the times of DokiDokigate. All evidence pointed to one man: UG Naka.
The police were told to arrest the suspect. But being a speed freak that he was, Naka jumped into his white Toyota Camri and drove away. A chase ensued, but being Asian, Naka crashed his car into a tree 10 minutes later.
Naka got apprehended, but he assembled one of the finest legal teams in history. In court, his defense showed that Sonic wore gloves; but they'd never fit on Goku's hands. This stumbled the prosecution; to the shock of the public, the jury decided Naka was not guilty.
However, most people still thought he did it. There was a persistent rumor that if you put a certain game into a S&K cartridge, it shows the words "I did it" instead of "no way". Naka even wrote a book titled "If I did it" to exonerate himself. But it was mostly just his rants how he hates gaijins and that he is never going to give them the code for Nights. Even my boomer granddad who never played Sonic said to me: "this Eugene Acker fella definitely stole it from that Akira Tori Amos guy".
Shigeru Miyamoto later commented on the matter: "Naka trial proves gamers will put up with mediocre evidence if the lawyers are good". But he also expressed his relief for his "brotha Naka" and said that "white people can't hold us in chains no mo".

I vaguely knew DBZ because of vidya mags covering the SNES games, but didn't know much else. I noticed Super Sonic was looking like a DBZ character but as a kid I didn't know how to interpret it, I thought maybe DBZ and Sonic shared the same universe.

>Dragon Ball (original, not Z) aired in the US as early as 1989.
They only aired in a few cities as a test and it was a horribly butchered version

A proper Dragon Ball version only really aired in 2001 in the US.

Go ask the French, Philipinos and Brazilians, because they're the only ones that cared about DBZ before the 2000s had begun.

that's what I was getting at.
the same thing nearly happened to DBZ, it was also originally sold into syndication only in a few markets where it performed horribly. they just happened to get lucky enough that one of the networks who bought the show was Ted Turner's Cartoon Network who decided it would slot in perfectly with their afternoon action cartoon bloc called Toonami, which at the time was airing Voltron Robotech Sailor Moon and Beast Wars.

In Portugal it aired in 96, we followed the French DBZ for translation.

Nothing much to say, point of sonic 2 wasn to play more sonic, and super sonic at the end felt more like a "wow, just like DBZ" Easter Egg" than anything related to the actual Sonic 2.

Only in Sonic 3 does the Super Sonic thing become explicitally a plot-starting device.
But in Sonic 3 and Sonic&Knuckles first and possibly only cartridge on cartridge add on that's what really draws attention that makes one go "duuude" and the super sonic overall felt like an Easter Egg, as the focus of Sonic 1, the Top Canon for "Sonic Logic", has no Super Sonic

In retrospect, super sonic feels weird, it's really the only blatantly japanese influence in a very american influenced japanese game
>a red white and blue mickey mouse type mascot who has the powers of a dc comic book character who fights a guy who's basically doc ock with minions
>and, he goes super sayain

it's the kind of thing you'd expect more from the 00s era games in hindsight, but there it was from the start, the one little gem of awkward japanese shit before the final fantasy waifus and space salamanders

Nigger I'm past 40. You'd have to be in your late teens or early 20s at the earliest to get fansubs thru the mail.

You're old and fansubs were fucking niche in the 90s. I have no idea why you started rambling about India, are you mentally retarded?

SEGA was literally in 3rd place for most of the Japanese version of the console war. The kids who bothered to play Sonic 2 probably went "Oh neat; Sonic went Super Saiyan just like Goku!" and continued on with their day.

Most shit in video games back then was cribbed from something else, so they didn't care.

>How did people react back in '92?

Unless you were a 90's Otaku-whatever, Dragon Ball was relatively unknown where I live. I do remember watching episodes of the original Dragon Ball in the early 90's. But Dragon Ball Z did't air on TV (Oceans Dub) here in Canada until 1996- 1997. Te episode where Goku transforms into Super Sayian for the first time aired in 1999. But the show always teased the transformation in the intro from episode 1. I owned a Sega Genesis Model 2 when I was a 12 with Sonic 2. I remember completing all of the bonus stages and obtaining Super Sonic. Then later finding the cheat menu to just unlock it later. I had no idea that the transformation was a reference to anything back then.
