Funnily enough her tail was replaced by a ponytail in the GBA games while the early concept art for Rayman 2 depicted her more like a catgirl, with animal nose and ears and all. Seems even the character designers couldn't agree what exactly she is supposed to be.

Sounds like the beta designs of Zoroark that were found in that Pokemon leak last year. It was supposed to have a tail, but the final design changed it into a ponytail... while still keeping the tail design. They basically cut-and-pasted the tail from it's butt into the back of it's head. I always felt that Pokemon's design looked off from it's "tail" just being long hair.
