I was playing Ocarina of Time last night and experienced a weird glitch where I died for no reason in Gerudo Valley.
>playing on original hardware
>gold cart (version 1.0)
>game had been experiencing issues
The game had frozen / crashed a few times before, so hardware issues could be at play. The console wasn’t reading the cartridge very well.
Basically what happened is that I rode Epona from Lake Hylia to Gerudo Valley and when I dismounted, the screen went black and Link made the scream sound like when he falls down a hole. The game started me back at the beginning of the area, near the wooden board over the water, and I was missing a whole heart. I did not clip through the ground and fall. I was on solid land, the screen went black, and I died. It was like I went out of bounds.
When I came back, I tried to recreate it, but it was like Epona was riding into an invisible wall. Movement was very limited, so I tried to play the ocarina and warp out of the area. The only evidence I captured that my game was glitching out is Link playing the ocarina facing way from the camera, which never happens in normal gameplay.

What happened here?

The weird random death happened on this side of the valley, opposite from the workers’ tent, next to this rock.

It was almost like I dismounted in just the right spot and touched an invisible instant death tile. Never seen anything like it.

is there a hole under the rock? either the hole or being too close to the rock with Epona blocking you being pushed away tricked the game into thinking you never landed after dismounting Epona and you "fell" into the death barrier.

This makes sense. It was near a rock, but I didn’t think to check for a hole.

There was no animation of Link falling through the ground. I just dismounted, Link screamed, and the screen turned black and put me back at the start of the area.

maybe just confusing the game as to whether you should touch the ground or keep falling into the hole kept you "stuck" inside the rock according to the game's logic, which voided you out.

Got too close to picrel and the game couldn't handle it. You should probably blow out your console and think about replacing your power supply, mate. Something's wrong with your unit.

I think this game is programmed so that if the game can't detect Link where he's supposed to be it just treats it like you fell in a death pit so you don't get soft locked. I think speed runner exploit this sometimes.
