>Take an NES game
>Decompile it
>Recompile it to work on a SNES
>Add MSU-1 support, a fan-made SNES enhancement chip that didn't exist anywhere near the SNES era
>Chip lets you replace the game's original chiptunes with fan-made covers
>Chip also lets you put the intro of the 90s US Megaman cartoon that looked nothing like the actual Megaman as an opening FMV in this NES game

Oh yeah, it's retro gaming time
Though to be fair it does also add QoL improvements like saving and quick-weapon switching, but technically you can do that on an NES too.

These sort of ports don't do a whole lot for me. They also do weird stuff like the Punch Out one putting the status bar at the bottom of the screen.
I think the N64 recomps are funny because they make the games into something actually playable...which says a lot about N64 games.

I'm only playing that if the in-game graphics match the box art.

Yeah, the Punch-Out one is weird that they moved the status bar. A lot of these though remove slowdowns and add QoL features, as well as other enhancements like being able to swap pallets or sometimes choose enhanced backgrounds or sprites.

I will take either just as long as it's not Project Nested's shoddy crap. So far I think nearly every port that was made by them has had a better Rumbleminze and/or Infidelity version except for Jackal.

I have no idea if their ports run any better on their emulator of the same name, but they don't run well on anything else and in many cases run worse than the originals, and they generally need additional files that only their emulator understands to make them run on it.

I like the SNES ports of NES games because I can play them in RGB without having an RGB modded NES.

this has to be the best msu-1 hack so far, it makes the game look almost like the actual arcade, and not just for the fmvs and audio, they made a lot of changes.

SF2 Alpha's MSU-1 hack is also good for the same reason. IIRC it removes the loading times as well.

Super Game Boy can also use MSU-1. You can play Link's Awakening with the soundtrack from the Switch remake.

This is interesting, as it looks like they put back in the animation frames that were removed from the retail release. If you look at the pre-release footage of the port, there's lots of animation frames that never made the final cut. Wonder where they got those assets from.

Depends on the hack, and many have multiple soundtrack options to choose from (A few hacks even support having multiple soundtracks that you can choose from and/or it chooses randomly). I have been going through a big list of MSU hacks recently, I downloaded a large set of pre-made ones but a lot of the choice of soundtracks for many of them were... poor, so I am manually going through the list of MSU hacks and choosing my soundtracks for the ones that give you options.

Not a fan of the ones that just replace the tracks with something from a later system (like the one that replaces the tracks from the original Megaman with the PSP remake), a completely different game in the series (Lots of hacks for Nintendo games like Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country that just replace them with the ones from a newer game on a modern system) or ones that replace the music with something completely different (such as anime games where they just put tracks from the anime OST in the game). I prefer the ones that at least sound somewhat like the original music. The rock version of Life Force (The latest Rumbleminze hack for that adds the option to choose between 5 tracks) is a great sounding one for example, and while it might be a bit much, I like the orchestral ones for Link to the Past too.

And then there are the MSU-1 hacks for the BS Zelda games that add back the original broadcast audio people would have experienced at the time and even have dubbed versions:

Probably the biggest issue from an accuracy standpoint at least is that it gets promoted around as though it's an accurate representation of what an SNES CD would be. In reality though it completely ignores the biggest technical limitation of such an add-on which would be the CD-ROM drive itself. All those hacks you see streaming FMV, CD Audio, etc. all at the same time would never work on a real SNES CD because they'd require data transfer rates higher than the DVD spec.

Yeah, there are hacks for the Pokemon games for that as well. Though it feels a little too jarring to see an original Gameboy game and hear CD quality music coming out of it.

Some of the hacks do more than just add MSU-1 support. For example, Contra III has a normal MSU-1 patch, one that also combines with the restoration patch, and one that also combines that with a SA-1 hack which reduces slowdowns, loadtimes, and adds saving of high-scores and options. Some of the MSU-1 hacks are just simply replacing the game audio with PCM, others also add other enhancements and do more than just replace the audio. There are a few "Deluxe" ones that on top of adding PCM audio increase the number of tracks in the game (The Super Mario World one for example can give each level it's own track rather than having a handful that are re-used for most levels like in the original game)

I just had a very silly idea. Kirby's Dream Land MSU-1 with music from Kirby Super Star. Instead of utilizing Super Game Boy to play native SNES music, just stream uncompressed audio recordings of it.

That was one of the games I ran into while I was looking at MSU-1 hacks, there were additional hacks for it that also updated the roster to current players or ones to add more secret characters to it like Raiden, Mario, etc.

>>11848901
I mean, if there is a MSU-1 hack for Dream Land then you can put any music you want in it. The hack takes the form of several .pcm files that are just essentially raw WAV files. The hard part is making a MSU-1 hack for a game, if someone else has already made that, then anyone can add any music they want to the game just by swapping out the PCM files, no need to re-hack the ROM once it has already had a MSU-1 applied to it. Not unless you want to do a more intricate hack that adds more music than the game originally had. (Or add FMV to it).
