NES to SNES Adapter
NES to SNES Adapter
md5: 4c094480147c5337dd7420b1a3931dda🔍
Why? Why would anyone do this? I can understand why some people might want to use a SNES to NES adapter if they find the SNES controller more comfortable, or their NES controllers are broken/lost, or even if they are playing a homebrew title on a flashcart that can make use of the additional buttons on a SNES controller.

But why the hell would you do the opposite and use a NES controller on a SNES? It's missing over half the buttons, the vast majority of SNES games would not be reasonably playable.

There had to be a game it worked with. I wanted to say World but that uses way more buttons.

That's why I said most. These adapters map B to Y and A to B. I am not familiar with the entirety of the SNES library but I would not be surprised if there was a game or two that did not use X, A, L or R, but the vast majority do not. Even Super Mario World used both B and A for two different types of jumps.

Also I am not certain but I think they might also make the SNES think X, B, L, and R are constantly being held down, so that could cause further problems in trying to use it for SNES games. I guess there are those NES to SNES ports but why go through all this trouble for that when those still work fine with a SNES controller? (Some of them might actually still not work with this as a few map extra features to the SNES's extra buttons. I know one of the Megaman SNES ports, I think 5, mapped autofire to X, making Megaman constantly fire nonstop if you used this adapter to try to play it unless you installed an autofire disabling patch.)

I am not familiar with the entirety of the SNES library but I would not be surprised if there was a game or two that did not use X, A, L or R, but I know the vast majority do use those some or all of those buttons in a required manner. Even Super Mario World like you mentioned used both B and A for two different types of jumps. I don't know if SMW can technically be beaten using only B and not A but I would not call it "reasonably playable" that way since you would not be able to jump off Yoshi, break yellow blocks under you, or bounce off many hazards.

Not rage bait, it's real, and apparently some people use it for some reason.

https://www.instructables.com/How-To-Make-a-NES-to-SNES-adapter/

Though you could also follow those same instructions but swap the male and female ports to make a SNES to NES controller adapter.

I was reading up on a homebrew NES game that was coming out and it mentioned it could optionally use that adapter to use the additional buttons of a SNES controller, and even the SNES mouse for a minigame apparently.

These instructions make it pretty clear why you would want to do this.
Because it's super easy.
I'd understand your frustration if this was like a commercial product or involved programming ICs or something, but this is literally just twisting and taping some wires together so it's just a fun little thing you can do for a laugh.

There are some shmups this would be useful for in the rare case you have a one of the rare high quality NES/Famicom arcade sticks. Ironically, most of them also require a famicom to NES adapter.

the NES dpad and buttons feel significantly better than the super nintendo pad which is extremely mushy.

If you already have a SNES to whatever adapter then you can now use the NES controller on it as well. So if you have a SNES to USB adapter now you can also have a NES to USB adapter.

My guess is that they are playing Super Mario All-Stars, that would actually be pretty cool playing the remasters on the OG controllers.

Earthbound qualifies. A for interact / confirm / open the menu, B for back/cancel, d-pad to move / navigate menus, every other button is redundant.

Wouldn't this work excellently with the Super Game Boy? Or is there need for XYRL in the menus or whatever for that? (I have never used one.)

I mean, obviously you could also just use a normal SNES controller.

You just have to know what you're looking for.
If you see an interesting one post it on /vr/ and myself or one of the other local gearfags will tell you if it's a good one or not.
The Famicom ASCII stick is one of the good ones.

The instructable said the guy is using it for emulation with a SNES adaptor he already had. NES is my favorite controller, I use it for everything. Need more buttons? I just rubber band on another one.
