I remember playing EverQuest 25 years ago. Most people were American, Canadian, European, or Australian.
There were Asian guilds (mostly Japan and Korea), but they largely stayed in their own bubble and rarely caused problems.
When you met someone outside of those two groups there were, as you said, interesting creme of the crop. One of our better monks was in Mexico, and I also knew a South African (who eventually fucked off to Australia, as they tend to do).
It really was a different internet. Online games just don't feel the same anymore, and a lot of that is down to the different user base.

It is estimated that at least a million of a specific Famiclone was sold in China, and that's just the most popular model. However that was for the late 90's and 00's and for well-off families, though it said that some workers would save up money for a whole year just to buy one.
This is why China is Famicom bootleg land and there was even a Chinese dev specialized in making "new" Famicom games like that port of Pokémon Yellow.
