Did terms like triple-A and double-A exist back in the 6th gen era? I mean, sure, Battle for Bikini Bottom wasn’t on the same level as MGS3, but the budget and scale gap wasn’t as huge as it is now, right?

i don't understand the huge hype for this game. it's fine i guess but middling for 6th gen platformers. is it just nostalgia for a lot of people?

No. I didn't start hearing that until the PS3 era.
>>11846998
Yes. The game is standard licensed shovelware of the time but kids gotta have their Spongebob.

SpongeBob fucking sucks after season 3 and everything beloved about it only lasted 3 golden seasons. This is the only SpongeBob game that is as close of an homage to the original series before it became another generic slop cartoon.

It's kind of like Simpsons hit and run having the soul of good Simpsons before it became zombie Simpsons.

It is interesting how this game received fairly average reviews across the board but is held up as the gold standard for licensed tie-ins by younger people.

Stop spreading this meme. Season 4 is mostly good.
>This is the only SpongeBob game that is as close of an homage to the original series
Despite AWE typically mass-producing aimed-at-kids shovelware, they made some decent point and click adventure games with SpongeBob for PC. Some of them are named after console titles but don't have much to do with them, guess it was a licensing agreement since this practice was somewhat common at the time. What's really cool is that they use original voice actors and backgrounds drawn either by the artists who worked on the show or someone who can really nail that look.

Compare it to Revenge of the Flying Dutchman. Battle for Bikini Bottom controls and feels infinitely better. I think the hype is mostly because it's a solid 3D platformer with SpongeBob rather than the phoned in crap that came before it.

It's not a real term anyway, note how developers and publishers avoid using it to avoid advertising regulators breathing down their necks and demanding raw numbers.

Nta, but i always felt threat way and this was before YouTubers could effectively feed people opinions like that.
Anything after the movie came out was a huge decline in quality.
When they rehashed the idea of a 24 hour krusty krab with the 23 hour krusty krab episode, I knew it was over.

Sure the decline probably continued to gradually get way worse so that at any point in time the earlier shit stains look good by comparison.
A 5 year old may as will say
>stop spreading the meme that only the first 10 seasons of spongebob are good. Season 15 is mostly good.
I'm sure that is or will be "true" by the time season 30 comes out.

So in order to actually enjoy a mediocre Spongebob game, I need to play a downright broken Spongebob game?

Back then game reviewers didn't really understand how to separate something being well-made (given a budget) from just generally spending a lot of money. If a game did something that needed a hundred employees working for two years, it was just a better game than one that didn't. It was like they didn't understand that a skyscraper and a country house are for different things - a skyscraper is just a better building. So cheap games were just bad games.

I wouldn't call Battle for Bikini Bottom mediocre, it's solid like I said. Not all time great platformer or anything, but legitimately good. But yeah the perspective helps.

I don't like the great exaggeration that S4 is irredeemable garbage, that's all. Most episodes are still good despite having slightly worse writing and some feel like they came straight from the early days. Though consistency did die with S4, that I always noticed. Bad episode in S1-3 means it's just mediocre, bad episode in S4 and onwards means "prepare your anus". Yet another victim of the bizzare concept that you typically see with late 90s-early 2000s western animation where the showrunners suddenly go "Let's make an episode so fucking dogshit that it can kill any interest for the show for no reason at all". Really clueless to why this happened so often, as if they couldn't help themselves.
>When they rehashed the idea of a 24 hour krusty krab with the 23 hour krusty krab episode, I knew it was over.
Fear of a Krabby Patty? It and Graveyard Shift are barely alike. It's a good episode. If you absolutely have to say "it's over", say it when you get to Good Neighbors.
>I'm sure that is or will be "true" by the time season 30 comes out.
I'm willing to defend even more controversial seasons. Late 2000s Bob certainly feels different and I get why people draw the line at pre- and post- movie, but S4 has enough classic era-esque outliers to be considered at least a mixed bag IMO.

Seasons 4 and 5 aren't dogshit but there's a definite change in the vibe of the show. Fear of a Krabby Patty and its sibling episode feel like a continuation of late season 3 (which I'm honestly not a big fan of but it's still not bad) but after that it becomes its own thing that increasingly has more misses than hits as it progresses. It's not horrendous though, I just treat it like Looney Tunes, same characters, VAs, and Producers, but different writers and animators so of course it's gonna be different.

I tried playing this recently and couldn't get into it. The I think about the more a realize BK and SM64 are the only good games in the open-world/collectathon platformer genre.
