Was Sonic Adventure 2 really intended to be the final Sonic game if Sega was unable to recover?
I don't know, any sega employees on the gay old video game board right now want to answer this?
They were immediately tasked with porting their games to gamecube so I think they coped with the dreamcast dying pretty quick
Hot take, and not intended to be bait to start a discussion about it, but I think the Sonic Adventure and anything after is trash. Incomprehensible plot, disconnected stories and levels, crap voice acting, mostly terrible level design, character movement is stilted and abitrary, world makes no sense. Like a bunch of disparate ideas just stuck on a board with the designers frantically trying to sting together a game with it. Sonic Team are a jumbled confused group of retards in a room putting anything on the design doc that someone says "hey this would be cool if...". The whole franchise would have been fine if it stopped at Sonic CD.
>Half decent music tho, can't fault that.
You guys enjoy the shit out of it tho, give 'er, I won't critique you for enjoying something. There will be some fellow autist replying calling me a moron unable to appreciate the games due to intelligence or something tho. Whatever.
>>11847941 (OP)Unlikely. More like a hail mary to save the Dreamcast. Exiting the hardware space must've been a bit hit for them but I don't think they were in danger of going bankrupt, they'd just move to only making games.
>>11847941 (OP)This is only ugly screenshot.
>>11848073sa1's story is kind of shit but sa2's is peak if you play the japanese version fansubbed. or maybe im just too autistic to let go of this shitty series its probably that one
>>11848126Thanks, but I tried. It's too stupid. It's fanfiction level quality and this is the official stuff. They had a good idea with Sanic being about saving woodland creatures, but they jumped the shark with the idea that talking hedgehogs are just a normal part of human society.
>>11848073That's not a hot take, everyone with taste knows Adventure is trash
>>11848073>uhm acktually the game about a talking blue animal just isnt on par with citizen kainThis is not a hot take. Its the most basic bitch opinion you could have about the adventure games and youre dumb for talking so much about it like its some new perspective.
>>11847941 (OP)Yes very obviously. Which is why they killed shadow then retconned that in heroes
>>11848073Zoomer take. The games didn't go to shit until Heroes.
>>11848524>>11848514>>11848526>>11848576Hot take because I knowingly went into a Sonic thread for Sonic fans and bitched about Sonic games. Context awareness.
>>11848073did you played SA2? is a huge improvement
>>11848073Yup. This guy gets it. I also really hate the character redesigns. Classic Sonic is a great design, almost timeless. He's appealing and fun. Adventure Sonic reminds me of that edgy 2000s Looney Tunes reboot that everyone hated. I KIND of like SA1 because of the "let's throw shit at the wall" mentality like having a hub world and fishing minigames and shit but SA2 and beyond is unplayable. I have no idea why people get attached to it.
>>11849443Sonicfags hate Sonic more than anyone else retard
>>11847941 (OP)Nah this gaem said hallo no meant good bye
>>11847941 (OP)if only
wouldve saved the poor blue blur from a world of pain, and likely a couple drug addictions
sonic has had a rough couple decades since
>>11848126>fansubbedsonic adventure 1/2 have japanese voices with subtitles built into every release of them. No need for fansubs.
>>11850761sa1 needs fansubbing because the localization changed a lot. but the story still isnt all that great. id still recommend the fansubs for sa2 because there were a lot of omissions/weird changes in the dub
>>11847941 (OP)According to some history of sanic book, Adventure 3 was planned for production during SA2 being finished up, but was canceled either during the DC death or instead focused on the port to the cube.
>>11848073At the time, i absolutely hated the Adventure games tone, but compared to what came after, I could enjoy them for their stupid shounen sincerity. Really, best scenario, they could have just treated the Adventure games as the "Mega Man X" of the franchise. I know Advance kept the classic gameplay somewhat alive, but it was still too much influenced by the new style.
>>11848073this is the correct take, and i grew up loving sonic
>>11850954No you don't need a fansub because there is already an official tanslation with subtitles and japanese voices in the game. Are you not reading my post or something
>>11850987im saying the official translation is inadequate. im aware you can play it with subs out of the box but i think the fanmade ones are better. its a more accurate translation
>>11848073For me, it's people saying that the Hub in SA1 was magical and really sold the sense of Adventure as you actually explored around and hiked from level to level, and then you play it and the hubs basically have nothing in them, and plot progression from thing to thing is often extremely random. Shit just appearing randomly when you needed, or suddenly exploding out of your way, with absolutely zero connection to what was just happening in the cutscenes and missions.
What's funnier is when they follow up with
>well you're just jaded and bitter, you can't appreciate the greater world that's implied and you get to peek intoand it's like, bitch, I get more of that just looking at the fukken skyboxes. The hubs are just SHIT.
>>11851083Oh ok you said localization and dub so it wasn't clear. I'll try playing it with that fan translation sometime I didn't know there was one.
>>11848098They were in danger of going bankrupt until their benefactor bailed them out on his death bed, sonic would have been sold to the highest bidder in liquidation and you still would have had sonic games
>>11853359Probably better sonic games desu senpai
>>11848073>disconnected stories and levels>world makes no sense>"hey this would be cool if..."this is literally both sonic AND mario since the beginning. probably a lot of other games as well.
there are plenty of things to criticize about the 3d games, but this part aint it, ESPECIALLY if you're praising the old games.
>>11852984they say shit like
>the hub world was great! it made things feel CONNECTED!and then
>sa2's map is stupid and makes so sensethe hub is empty and pointless with nothing to really DO, and makes things MORE eclectic by placing them so close together. the map in sa2 at least has clear progressions and arrangements, and scale isnt necessarily as drawn. you can see pumpkins in the distance of sky rail, giving a sense of connectivity too, without being right on the other side of a wall/door from a hub.
its just nostalgiafags with no actual argument to articulate, and no answer to counterpoints.
>>11854867Post the image at least, I'm a big fan of these stylized maps games would have. They always give the same feelings of an amusement park map where it only needs to represent areas and show roughly in what direction things are without being 1:1 exact. Knux needs to pop out of a manhole into the city to meet up with Sonic and Tails? Sure, the mine is nearby, and the mine is close to pumpkin zone because it's full of ghosts and ghost warnings. The Rogue oasis and the first Knuckles map with the wind tunnel are doing this duality thing, the asteroid levels are bits of the debris field formed by the Ark opening up.
It does exactly as much as it needs to in order to form a semi-believable space.

and now I'm an idiot who forgot the image fuck me
Sonic Adventure's original lighting was really ambitious and dynamic, it's a shame they had to downgrade it before launch, they also brought the framerate down to 30 before release too so it running stable was obviously a high priority. If you look at some early pre-release footage you can see both better lighting and 60FPS gameplay
>Hitachi SH4 chips
>Rarely-used volumetric per-pixel shadows and volumetric fog features
>Order Independent Transparency and is the only system to date that came with OIT at the hardware level
In the Tokyo International Forum, you can see the Ninja Lights system in action. Dynamic shadows, lights and other effects that aren’t seen in the final game.
The final game removed most of the Ninja Lights system, but some of it is still leftover. Some objects like the TVs still use Ninja Lighting.
The Dreamcast had the ability to perform what was called Order Independent Transparency which SA2 used extensively for things such as item balloons and artificial chaos. When SA2 and SA1 were ported to Gamecube, many of the lighting and transparency features that the Dreamcast had couldn't be replicated and they were never fixed.
Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were extremely ambitious. Sonic Adventure 2 is a much, much, much more robust game internally than SA1. I cannot stress that enough. It is much more flexible in every conceivable way, and it is really impressive how much Sonic Team improved on in such a short time frame. But it is still obviously based on SA1 and shares a lot of infrastructure, albeit greatly improved
The main lighting issues SA2B has are the inability to draw the DC version’s shadows and specular lighting, which affects a lot of stuff (GUN robots, Shadow’s shoes, possible Sonic’s jaw even).
