I've been on the internet on various NES forums and retro game spaces for almost 30 years. I've never met someone who actually loves Adventure Island. The closest game in the series to being a classic is Super.

The worst part of Adventure Island 2 is how practically every stage has a stupid death trap right at the end that you’re almost guaranteed to die on your first try. Stupid way to artificially increase the game difficulty, also every world has like 10 stages (last one has 14) and you start from the beginning of the world when you die so it feels bloated.

Level design is good, the gotchas aren't that common and you know what to expect from a level after one or two deaths if you don't get past it first try. The worst part is that navigation between levels, while not random as it might seem to be, is still trial and error. You choose levels by picking a specific egg in the roulette, but you don't know which one will take you where.
