Does it even use custom chips? I know the creator claimed that it had all these special super mega custom chips in it, but I think people found out that it was all fake and just cheap common chips?

It has this huge looking chip in the middle of the PCB that almost looks like a modern PCB, but then people realized that it's just a fancy cover with epoxy under it, and if you remove the epoxy it's just standard chips under it.

Guy is genuine scum.
He screws people over with black resin inside the cartridge no one knew about till it melts.
They scrubbed the brand names off the chips used because he was paranoid.
They STILL haven't given everyone their copy of the game they paid for.
Rumours say it was fonzie that had an argument with the warehouse which is why no more were made and they kept quiet about it.
Fonzie makes new kickstarter claiming theyll release a digital version.
Then another kickstarter for a chibi game gear release.
Money mysteriously starts disappearing.
Gets found out fonzie was sending emails to kickstarter supporters telling them to only pay 1 cent and they'll recieve an email on where to make a proper payment- IE his personal bank account.
Gets found out hes putting people on a list tier system, the more you pay the sooner you get your copy, More money also means jap/eu/usa covers.
Gets found out hes putting certain YouTube etc influencers first.
Has an argument with KS about circumventing the money and claims it was a mistake.
Does it again claiming they need abit more money because they've almost reached the goal.
Hasn't told anyone he works with this shit hes been doing circumventing the money.
Runs off.

of course it's going to use off the shelf parts, that's what FPGAs are for. don't expect an indie game to have a fucking VLSI IC designed and fabbed for it. the last time I saw startups doing that, it was in the bitcoin boom (and even that first company ended up going bankrupt) circa 2012.

That part isn't strictly paranoia, it's just basic copy protection. No one will know how to touch that thing if they don't even know what chip it is, unless it's some turbo autistic retard who can reverse engineer a console with a multimeter, or the chinese who can just decap and photo the chip to find out that ic x is big standard sdram etc.

well, it is now confirmed (if you look at paprium.h in modified core) that this chip was used as DSP for 48KHz audio processing & playback (bgm+sfx) as well as sprites data decompression/scaling. It also served as copy-protection apparently as it automatically patches some parts of the ROM to get it playable, so that dumping the ROM chip does not get you all the needed data.

>Then another kickstarter for a chibi game gear release.
Seems if you trip it's copy protection (which is super easy to do as just about every current emulator will, and even happens frequently on real hardware) it will play an intentionally shitty game gear-like game called PAAAAA- with intentionally ear-rape music (which appears to be Never Gonna Give You Up on the title screen?), shitty graphics, and shitty gameplay. Are you sure you wasn't thinking of this? Or was this idiot actually planning to make this into a full fledged Game Gear game?

>Yes that was part of the protection of the game in case someone tried to dump the ROM content from the cartridge (which has been available for several years already). When the extracted 8 MB *.bin is played on hardware (even an original console via an everdrive) without detecting the protection chip from the original cartridge, it plays this ridiculous little game (8 bits style with crappy soundtrack). Even on the original console with an original paprium cartridge the problem occures from time to time and this silly little game appears when the pins are dirty and the contacts are not tight enough within the slot.

Man, isn't it great that Fonzie wasted time and money on shit like this when most backers never got jack shit?

>He screws people over with black resin inside the cartridge no one knew about till it melts.
>>11849884
>He didnt even care when the resin was leaking fro.

Any proof of this? I tried to look it up and all I found was an old post that some of the carts came with that giant metal cover already off and rattling inside, but I don't see anything about it actually melting.

There are very few cartridges of this thing out there, and it seems very unlikely there will ever be more. I assume most people who were lucky enough to get one aren't willing to have it torn apart and even potentially destroyed for the sake of reverse-engineering it. It's not as if you can just dump it like most protos, or even just de-solder then re-solder the chips thanks to that giant resin blob.

So much for ProjectLittleMan and those other github projects dedicated to dumping the game, though they did uncover some cheatcodes I guess?

https://github.com/ArcadeHustle/WatermelonPapriumDump

Gotta love that some idiots were selling the fallen-off metal covers...

No it was an actual proper colored GG port he claimed he was making. It was up on the kickstarter page and had 5 images shown.

I was trying to find the images of the cartridges with the black resin problems but cant seem to find them on google now.
At the time images were shown of the inside were it had black resin pasted all over the chips.
If this overheated in the mega drive the resin started to leak and would go into the MD destroying both the cart and the console. Some other pics posted had images of the resin practically covering the entire inside of the cart.

I've looked and looked but can only seem to find videos calling fonzie a scam and a few bits in the videos of the resin and mentions of the leaks

Yes, I know what about. Also it's apparently epoxy, not resin (I doubt resin would melt like that)
But I saw nothing about them melting, even though I have seen pictures of the cover off exposing the epoxy.

If picrel is why you think it was melted, that appears to be how it came from the factory, the "melted" parts is just empty space between chip, which would get the least hot while the chips themselves are completely covered in solid epoxy.

I see no word or proof that it ever melted while in use, and especially none that it melted into people's Genesis consoles. There are a lot of things already fucked up with this game, no need to invent more if they are not true, it just hurts the arguments against him if some are found to be false.

No it's not that image.
Theres 3 images floating about by 3 different buyers.

1 had the game in his genesis console showing the black goo had melted whilst playing. That it had fried his console and the black goo was oozing out the top of the slot were the cart goes in.
Fonzie tried to claim this version of the genesis isnt suitable and that's why it did this.

2. It was a red cart edition and the guy showed the back and underside of the case were because the black goo had leaked it fried the mb (game) and caused a burn in the back and goo had poured onto the teeth.
He said he pulled the cart out once he smelled burning.

3. It was of a cart like this opened but it showed the black muck smeared all over practically everything

Considering how heavily people have been covering this trainwreck for years, I find it weird that I never saw this mentioned anywhere and that this is the first I am ever hearing of this, and attempts to search for these images or even just others talking about it happening turn up nothing.

Then all this bs came out about it. I've been trying to find the pics and comments but am struggling to find them. I was able to find the GG promotional version they promised yet never delivered.
I'll keep looking but it's well known in the community that this shit happen.

When metal dragon was going to be released people were contacting the guy making it BEGGING not to have the black goo inside because they were worried about it melting and leaking. He had to put peoples minds at ease and say he wasn't going to do that shit

Nintendo and Apple use their own silicon so the don't have to, nobody has the schematics but them.

Apparently some of those crashes might even be intentional as part of the copy protection? Fonzie seems to have put a lot of work into obsessively trying to stop copies of the game from working beyond just the check at startup. Even mocking the player in some of them such as here, this billboard is apparently supposed to show a different message normally, but will show this if it detects a pirated copy and intentionally crash later.

I saw this >>11851627 in the last level and worried but it didnt crash. The new .so file bypasses it.

However it's not worth playing at all. It really is dogshit.
You do just press A to beat the game. The enemies and moves are crap. The music is awful. The graphics are nothing to be impressed over. Enemies are stolen from other games.

Everywhere I have looked, there seem to be two lines of thought about this game. Either it's total ass, or that it's a great game. There seems to be no in-between, and before somebody thinks those praising the game are backers, most of the commentary I have seen are from people who pirated it form this recent hack and played through it. About the only common complaint I see everyone make regardless if they loved or hated it (and I am surprised nobody here brought up) is that you can cheese the AI by doing nothing but jump-kicking, it does not seem to be able to figure out how to counter that.

There is a shitload of homebrew for the NES and Genesis, people aren't going to crap their pants just because somebody made another one, it's mostly the notable ones now that get noticed and people talking about them outside of "Here is every upcoming homebrew for this system" style lists. There is a reason that people are talking about NES games like Former Dawn but nobody is talking about Pizza Portals. The dev used to be respected and known for making a really good homebrew Genesis RPG before this, now though even most of the anti-piracy advocates I have seen have been in FAVOR of pirating this over all the bullshit he has pulled over it's development.

Genesis carts using add-on chips was especially rare, one of the only games to do that was Virtua Racing for proper 3D support.
SEGA's preferred strategy was hardware add-ons, the SEGA CD added some processing power beyond just being able to play audio from a CD, and the 32X was this weird Frankenstein setup where two video outputs were merged.

Add-on chips was Nintendo's own answer or third-party answers to extending the capabilities of the NES or SNES.

Honestly, I'm surprised history went the way it did with retro consoles becoming super expensive collectors items. I would have thought like, they'd sell SNES and Genesis still, but as budget consoles the same way we had garbage like Tiger electronics or those "100 games on one system" turds.

Your kid cries for games but you dont wanna buy a new system for 500 dollars? Ok throw them a 40 dollar SNES

I guess the main thing there is, how much online has taken over gaming. The 7 year old I know only gives a fuck about roblox because you can use it to chat

Many got a physical release, and some indeed by teams with a record of making homebrew games. It's not at all rare to see.

Neofid comes to mind, they have made several banger Genesis games and have a new one coming out soon that people are looking forward to.

>Of course whatever track record Fonzie had, he shat it away completely, but that wasn't yet known when preorders went up.
Pretty much, yes. Everyone trusted him back then since because before this he DID make good games, but he completely pissed all that way with this one. Never seen so much of the community that normally would be very against this in support of it instead.

I agree.... to a point. If you end up doing something like that "Doom on NES" cart where it's just a RaspberryPi running the game and outputting video to the NES/taking inputs from the controller than I don't feel that counts anymore, you are just using the console as a glorified video output/controller input at that point. (Though I guess they still would have had to write a system that renders each screen as tiles and mounts it to a part of RAM mapped to the CHR ROM on the NES, that's about the only cool part, the rest who cares, you could play any game with such a setup)

When you get to the point where the game is basically just running on the cart then it no longer counts. Paprium though from my understanding does not do this. It's why I don't care for most of these "They used special chips!" arguments, most of them are not pulling the bullshit that Doom on NES did. On top of that of course any newer games that use special chips will use a FPGA, because that's the only reasonable way to do it, you aren't going to be able to spin up a factory to pump out a few thousand ASICs just for your homebrew game, especially if it's a copyrighted chip. I don't see the issue as long as you aren't using the FPGA to do something well well beyond any hardware at the time would have been able to do, or running the game entirely on it.

As for why you didn't see it much on the Genesis. It's because the SNES had a weak CPU but good video hardware, it was not hard at the time with the way the system was designed to add co-processors to assist with that. Genesis had a good CPU, better than the SNES's, but weak video hardware, which was not that easy to supplement. SegaCD and 32X (the latter of was a mess to connect) were the best they could do.

From my understanding the Genesis version of Virtua Racing did shove about the equivalent of half a 32X in there.

It was also prohibitively expensive ..

I am well aware, the chip was expensive and IIRC was also quite faulty, they basically got scammed.

Also it's the only Genesis game that won't work while a 32X is attached due to it conflicting with the 32X's chips, not that you would want to play anyway if you have a 32X since the 32X version was better.

IIRC though wasn't Pantasy Star 4 also expensive because of it's hardware?

I think that ultimately, at the end of the day, THE FONZ could have made the whole game in Scorpion engine, have it run on a stock Genesis, and completed it in a reasonable amount of time and budget. Plenty of other Genesis homebrew have done the same. But his inexperience and hubris led to a clusterfuck of custom chips and code because he just had to have his special big baby be TEH BESTEST EVAR!!!1one. Too bad, so sad.

Definitely hubris. His previous game didn't work in most emulators simply because it's mapper was not supported, and it did some custom things no other game did like run off a cart but support the SegaCD for enhanced music if you put the soundtrack disk in it.

I recall the kickstarter was advertising all these crazy custom chips the game would use. The dude definitely wanted to make something crazy that was overpowered, but of course, reality is a lot harder than dreams.

1. Fonzie is a piece of shit
2. To this day we have buyers who never recieved their copies
3. The ost is dreadful
4. The game is utter shit.

We have mod/homebrew games such as River City Girls of Rage or Street Fighter 2 of Rage and those are Lightyears ahead of this awful crap.

Imagine being scammed into paying for this, getting a copy, realising how shit it is, run the risk everytime you play it that it COULD leak black slime from the cart into your genesis

If people like the ost on this game then they have no taste on what an actual good ost is. Wouldnt surprise me if ape/zoomer think the music is good because its absolute shit.

Gameplay - people defending this games mechanics are either just happy to be given slop or that dont know what a good fighting game is (probably snes owners) because this is garbage. Even on the highest setting you can cake walk this just by spamming A button.
Run attack might as well not be there.
Back holding is pointless because you just do the same animation as you do from the front.
Only 1 jump kick attack? No down kick or standing still jump kick (even FF2 had this!).
Characters are either ugly or missed opportunities (Alex could of been given a bunny girl suit).
All the enemies are literally stolen characters from other games.
Theres not 1 single original idea here in paprium. They even fumbled up stealing cyber city odeos look/theme by telling the story so badly

See? You're exactly what I mean about people who feel that any expansion chips are "cheating". There is a difference between a co-processor performing some of the game's calculations and the game running on it's own computer inside the cartridge.

The ARM chips used in those two shogi games were much more powerful than the FX chip, yet we know they were only used for the AI and the game itself was running on the SNES.

>As for why you didn't see it much on the Genesis.
Genesis did not have proper cartridge inputs for add-on chips, SNES did (IRQ, an extra data bus, clock signals, etc). Genesis was fundamentally flawed in this regard because the only expansion it could do was getting pre-prepared tile data from expansions (Virtua Racing, Sega CD), copy those to VRAM, and display them. Because the VRAM was not double buffered, you could only upload a few tiles at a time, not enough to refresh the entire screen.

As a result every add-on that expanded the graphics had to run either at a stupid slow frame rate, or take up only a small place of the screen. All the Sega CD scaling games, all the Sega CD FMV games, the SVP using Virtua Racing, even vanilla Genesis games doing 3d, were limited by how little tiles you could upload to the memory.

It also did not have any IRQ pins anywhere, so add-ons could not signal the CPU "here, we have data ready for you", so you had to have both chips looking at each other every other frame which slowed things down further and made it necessary to put extra CPUs in the Sega CD. You couldn't have a cpu run parallel to run games because there was too much latency. All the add-ons could do was push tiles, and the system was too slow to read those.

SNES had none of those problems so they could put whatever the fuck they wanted on the cart. The MSU-1 fan-made add-on could push full screen FMVs because the SNES add-on ports were actually useful for making add-ons, unlike the Genesis ones.

We have a mountain worth of beat em ups both on the MD and Snes and even the most boring of beat em ups such as The Peace Keepers has more effort put into it than this.
I dont hate the game, I just see it as an exceptional disappointment that fails on almost every level of what it's meant to offer + its legacy is that it will be remembered as that scam genesis game were the main guy stole all the money

Yeah that sounds about right. You know what's funny, I've often thought SNK should have designed a plugin cartridge adapter for the MVS that upgraded the system capabilities of that cartridge slot. NeoGeo64 was a disaster; a simple upgrade board that allowed you to add 3D games to existing MVS cabinets would have fared better in the market and possibly paved way to an upgraded hardware platform down the line.

Pretty fine with it, Sprites need more work
450 mb
This made me chuckle

Then the girl climbing away from tounge guy on the roof top

If fonze wasn't so protective and hard on for hardware, went digital
He'd made more money
Then it wouldn't be retro

Glad this got cracked and emulatorable
This made me kinda hate RetroArch

I hate that retroarch is made for consoles playing on televisions. It has the worst mouse selection response of any program I've ever used. Why do they even bother putting computer cores on retroarch if they can't even get mouse selection working?

Technically not fully cracked, that's why the 450mb file size. The sound hardware has not been cracked/reverse engineered and the music itself has not been dumped, people are using MP3 files of the soundtrack as a way to bypass that.

I don't think there is much drama against doing that. I know years ago he used to be against adding Pier Solar support but then eventually added it, and that's back when Fonzie was still respected. It's been near-universal hate for Fonzie and people going "Screw him! I am glad it's been pirated!" throughout this entire thing. If anything he would likely get praise, not drama. People working on SEGA cores on the MiSTer have been pretty casual about looking to get it to work on that too, not even caring about any drama it could cause.

I only saw one single French guy make a video against this... and he was heavily downvoted, nearly all of the comments (with Google Translate) were disagreeing with the video too.

Drop CORES and INFO in the main RA folder. Launch core named "Paprium" than launch "paprium.bin". If it starts with minigame than die and reset core. It should now play the main game. That's it.

Tbh, Fonzie did put himself into this position.

Instead of using tools for the Mega Drive, he made his own and programmed using Assembly.
He wanted to make the biggest and baddest game on the system, so he needed a shit lot of content and pretty graphics.
He made a game of a old ass system that couldn't support his vision so he threw in extra chips that added even more complexity to an already big ass scope.
Etc.

This is an extreme case. You can make Paprium in Unity in a year.

I think the design of Alex and Tug and most of their sprite work is really good, they did a great job on them both.

The gameplay on the other hand could be better, but I find it fun to just play through all the stages and paths, beating all the bosses and unlocking the secret characters - even if the gameplay itself is not that great.

Yeah Paprium looks great on screens but some sprites are straightforward traced from SoR (e.g. Dice's running punch = Axel's grand upper, those parody gay dudes, etc.). I like references but that's a little too much for my taste. Music is okay, love supermarket theme.

I'm not 100% about how it exactly works but to reach the final levels you need to either:
- unlock Ba Ba (hidden in Docks level, when you see the flying pink drone, beat up all enemies then punch the sealed door on the left) that will give you access to the NX terminals (red arcades things)
- have a character sit on the police HQ throne which will allow you to
take the shortcut to the Spa in the subway level

AND

- have a character sit on the Golden of Seas throne to get the pass to go beyond KTV

That's just a work-around because the game is only partially cracked. Doing that way would be like when we needed decrypted graphics packs for S-DD1 or SPC7110 games instead of the emulators just supporting the chips themselves. Would be better to work on cracking and dumping the sound hardware instead of using MP3s from the soundtrack as a work-around.
