Are OEM cables really better?

Yeah no one expects to get a quality image from this kind of tech anymore so the standards have gone down as low as possible. People are just happy if it comes on and works. If it's noisy blurry and looks like shit, that's just because it's old. So the oem cables aren't videophile grade or anything but they're better than what gets shit out of china

It's not like there's bit precision in these things cause they're not digital. As long as you have a medium to transmit electricity it shouldn't matter one bit.

There's OEM quality, cheap as dirt chinese quality, and overbuilt third party quality.
You pick what ever you want. For SNES, I prefer Hori's video adapter.

You can clearly tell if a bad cable is bad. Noisy image that's clearly picking up interference from something or audio that sounds like a poorly tuned AM radio.
But once you get to a certain point it doesn't really matter. It's not like the reds are gonna be any redder or the pixels significantly sharper on your fancy ass cables compared to cheap chink shit.
One of the big advantages of OEM cables is that they're guaranteed to be built correctly. For example PS1 RGB cables have capacitors in them that slightly darken the image, but if you use that same cable on PS2 then the image is a bit too dark and if you're buying cheap chinese "PlayStaiton RBG HIGH QUALITY KABEL" then you've no idea what the fuck you're actually getting.

Spoken like someone who has never tried third-party cables and been greeted with a black-and-white upside down image with tracking and terrible screeching audio. I'm glad for you, I guess.

Interesting, I have often used OEM PS1 cables on PS2, SNES on 64, etc. Are these sorts of differences tracked anywhere outside developer reference docs?

A lof of third-party cables are poorly made and introduce a checkerboard pattern.

I would rather buy Nintendo AV multi-port to generic output adapter. Like one side would plug into the system, and on the other side would be all the different types of video outputs the console can provide.

How could an analog cable introduce a pixel perfect checkerboard artifact? If anything, based on that image I would assume the 'bad' cable is the better one for not blurring away the N64's dithering.

The checkerboard pattern isn't from the N64's dithering. It's in addition to. As for why this happens: I don't know for sure, but allegedly it's due to improper shielding or something.

I have been using the same SNES cable for 30 years and it is still golden, I ended up losing my N64 and GC cables over the years so I just swap the same SNES cable around and I have no issues with it.
Take that for what you will, I don't have experience with 3rd party cables in this case but I do with the PS2. I took a random printer cable, shaved it down to fit into the PS2 power port and once again been using it for roughly 15-ish years with no issues, it also worked for the PSP charger. If I am honest the only OEM cables I ever had issues with was for the power cable on the Genesis, I never got a 3rd party replacement cable for it though since at the time (mid 2000's) they were a dime a dozen and I could get a whole complete console for $20.

Cheap cable manufacturers split the composite signal and use it for s-video. You're seeing a sharpened version of composite instead of true s-video.

Than cheap 3rd party cables you would find on ebay or Amazon? Usually, yes. I tried those cheap cables thinking it would not matter for something like a genesis but they looked like shit compared to when I got an OEM pair, same for the AC adapter, the cheap 3rd party one had buzzing in the audio.

The several hundred/thousand monster cables? Fuck no.

Yes but marginally and YMMV. Some consoles and cables yield better than others. All subjective and dependent on your setup.

I know some anons are going to call me a retard, but if, for whatever reason you can't use an OEM Model 1 Genesis AC adapter for Genesis/Super Famicom/AV Famicom, a center pin negative 9v 1.5a guitar pedal AC adapter will do in a pinch, and it's better than the 3rd party "replacement" AC adapters for the systems.

That's funny because that's exactly what I bought for my SNES and A/V Famicom. I get to pick what cables get used. Right now I'm using vintage RCA cables that were made in Japan. They look a lot like the A/V cable that shipped with the North American NES. Just a little thicker and stereo audio. I like them.

There are so many power adapters out there that are of higher quality than the OEM adapter. I mean look at what people do with Sony's Slim PS2 power adapter.

There's some cheap garbage out there, I mean some of the knockoffs are probably decent but meh, if you get OEM you know it'll be good
If you're doing RGB definitely get OEM

The real question is how was the cable capable of taking a picture of its output, combining it with another image, solving the captcha, and uploading it to the 4chin.

I think it depends on the console and what type of output. I've never noticed a difference from component or composite off brands but SCART and s-video can look worse or have audio buzz

Sounds like an issue with the port over and issue with the cable

I ordered a cheap replacement composite cable back in like 2010 for my cube, and it had this really bizarre issue where the image contrast and brightness seemed substantially increased; with lighter shades appearing completely white.
It was so bad that the text in games like Warioware was borderline unreadable and turning down the brightness of the TV didn't help either.

Dunno if such cables are any better now quality-wise but this one was fucking awful for sure.

There are some really shitty 3rd party cables but in some cases the original cables aren't actually the absolute best. They're usually a safe choice though.

it's crosstalk from the composite side of the av cable.
leaving the composite cable unplugged solves it. this is a tv fault, tv manufacturers didn't expect people plugin composite and svideo at the same time, so they didn't isolate the signals.

I have two s-video cables. One is a cheap third-party one that has checkerboarding. The other is a high quality cable connected via an ElectronNMB (a type of multi-out box). No checkerboarding from it, even when connecting all three outputs at the same time.

You can get good newer cables, made by retro enthusiasts for cheaper.
but OEM cables are good, but they are aged, so they might lose their quality,

This reminds me of that one time when I tried picrel to play my Wii.
The result was horrible, I tried playing with the settings but nothing worked
So I digged out an old LG TV that supports the original OEM cables and it was much better.
I have been searching for a bigger TV or else I have to stick my ass with the WiiU
