I disagree with some of the criticism about the visuals, sometimes the hard pixels of the sprites stood out a little on the more blur-style environment, but it's much more subtle on a CRT, more so given the sprites are usually moving. I never really got the impression it was two different art styles slapped together, it always felt like I was playing a big painting.
I'm especially confused about why the creator considered it such a mistake and then went on to allow the ugly anniversary editions. Maybe he just really hated the music. Music seemed appropriate to me.
However, this game was a total chore to play for me, I didn't find the puzzles or gameplay interesting and I'd rather watch a playthrough than replay it myself. Maybe liking the 3DO version best is just another symptom that I don't share the dev's taste.
