Nah, I dig it. All vidya is gameplay plus sound and visual art - even in so called 'pure arcade' games. Some major on one side or the other, the overall experience is how they both come together.

SotC's atmosphere and story keeps you chasing the gameplay experience, which is a pathfinding and resource balancing game. If you don't like the atmosphere or prefer more 'tell me, don't show me' stories - fair enough.

>>11850037
I think the ones they chose were good - it is just a shame the world was quite as empty as it was. It also feels like there could have been an expansion disc very easily (even on PS2), given the success of the game.

Not to say that the low FPS on PS2 was intentional, but I like how it makes the bosses feel heavier. Film makers actually intentionally lower the FPS during action sequences to make each movement more striking

The time attack mode is absolutely fucking terrible, though. Some of the target times in hard mode are just completely unreasonable, especially #3 which is borderline impossible unless you do everything more or less perfectly through the entire run specifically manipulate the colossus AI at certain points in a way that's not really congruous with the normal gameplay, and also just get lucky.

They're all technically possible, sure, but it's just frustrating as hell because the colossi hav too much randomness in their patterns to consistently reproduce perfect runs down to the second. It's one of the japanese things where you're supposed to beat your head against the same wall until you randomly get lucky one time and the completely arbitrary thing you need happens the way it needs to. I refuse to believe even the devs could beat #3 with any consistency. It takes all the fun out of the game and turns into a mad scramble against an unforgiving RNG. FUCK those time trials. I only did it once on PS2 and I won't ever try again

It's not a bug, it's due to the higher framerate. The same thing happens on PS2 emulation since there's no timing accuracy yet. The game runs too smoothly. Bluepoint had to re-work the physics to match higher framerate for the remake. Only way to experience the original PS2 version is on real hardware at the moment.

It was kind of cool having the minotaur-y type ones that used more of the environment as well (I know they all did to some extent). I don't think I felt let down by them being in the game.

Shadow of the Colossus has good boss fights to do in the overworld. What did you find to be the most enjoyable thing to do in Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask? I enjoyed the sidequests in both Ocarina of Time and especially in Majora's Mask. For its time, the game worlds felt very alive. SotC is barren between the boss fights. If Zelda games had literally nothing to do between the boss fights, and I mean literally nothing, not there's things to do but they personally don't appeal to you, then you'd have a comparable situation.

The boss fights are restricted to closed-off arenas. The game was supposed to have the colossi roaming the overworld, but they couldn't make it work. So, really, the overworld is just a large empty space to pad out gameplay as you ride between the bosses.
