I genuinely had more fear playing B3313 than any "horror" game

The only thing that comes close is Boo's haunted mansion, which scared me shitless as a kid even though in hindsight that's kind of silly

Most 3D games pre-PS2 felt slightly scary and uncanny in some way, even as a kid I realized that and thought it was fucking cool.

I don't get how boomers can't understand this.

Clearly the early 3d gives the game an "uncanny" vibe.
I was never shaking scared playing this game, but yeah there is definitely an element of surreality with the awkward geometry.

I have beaten more than between 800 and 850 "retro" games by this board's definition. But I could never get into SM64.

For the longest time I thought I couldn't get into it because I didn't have a single pad with good enough analog stick to use for emulation. Recently I finally got one, and indeed that made SMB64 much better.

I still hated the game and dropped it after a few levels. There is no art direction, they just took some stock textures and slapped them randomly with no regards for art direction, and the controls feel unnatural and overcomplicated which is emphasised by how the game needs to put a thousand help signs just to explain them. It's funny people pretend like this game is a masterclass and that it influenced millions when I don't see anything like SM64 in another platformer.

That's the power of Mario and that's real scary indeed.

The way you can make Mario move/style points is really unmatched.

I mean, you only say most of this because we are 30 years past it's release.
For the time it was amazing and influenced every 3d game that came out afterword. You do not see this because it is already so ubiquitous. We are talking the raw essentials of the genre.
It's like saying you don't see anything in pop music in the past 30 years that reflects the influence of the Beatles, but that's because we take everything they did for granted now.
Same with Seinfeld, every TV situational comedy owes something to Seinfeld even if it isn't immediately obvious.

Boomers weren't playing this shit. Kids born in time to be old enough to play it? We thought it was cool.

They accidentally used freemasonic lodges as inspiration for the castle. That probably plays a lot into the uncomfortable feelings.

people always say this like Seinfeld was this groundbreaking show. literally the only thing it did differently was scumbag protagonists.

Not true. It popularized observational humor and broke the A plot B plot fomula, just to name a couple things.

Have you seen a Seinfeld episode? No, not every episode has an A and B plot especially the first 2 seasons. This was novel at the time.
Also, no one is saying it was never done before, retard. It popularized it.
Now fuck off to /tv/ and stop shitting up this thread.

Not overly scary, but uncanny I guess is the word.

I used to be scared of my RL basement in my old house. As a result, the basement part of the castle with the big Boo and the short staircase used to give me goosebumps as a kid.

my cousin and i are both gen z, but he still had an n64 for some reason even though it was already dated in the 2000s.
i remember playing various games with him together when visiting and couldn't help but find the 64's visuals eerie. everything looks so abstract and blurry compared to the gamecube graphics i was familiar with so i get this feeling completely t.b.h.

it's not just super mario 64, ocarina of time had it too

Yeah, really strange. It's like your home alone and your parents aren't home for some reason only it's worse because you're home alone in someone else's house and her parents aren't there. That's unnerving. Now imagine that were you and you were all alone except you weren't really alone because her dog is stuck in the wall and he keeps telling you how everyone you love is stuck in the wall because a godzilla put them there, so you have to go find godzilla and ask him to stop, but then every door you open teleports you to different places like the north pole with no santa(he must be stuck in the wall too), a fart cave and even he'll itself. Only bad people go to he'll so why are you there? Are you a bad person too?
