On a technical level, what was wrong with the Sega Saturn?

That's a good question.
Technically there wasn't anything wrong, it just didn't have the games people wanted like the Genesis.

It was a dedicated 2d machine in a time where 3d was extremely trendy. So noone played its 2d sprite games and its 3d games didn't look that great. When Playstation came out it had games like Wipeout, which looked really clean for 3d. Saturn didn't have games liek this. The 3d games on it all looked very pixelated.

Many people will say the tech inside it was shit, which is true.
However, the real problem was that it was too expensive for what it offered (partly because of the aforementioned shit but pricy tech). Also, it was poorly supported, especially in the West: SoJ hated the Genesis era, so fair number of Genesis IPs were never brought to Saturn.
