how in the hell do you get EAX audio to work on modern systems

Creative Alchemy, if you have one of their modern sound cards you can even get 3, 4 and 5 working
(do now that all of this is software emulated and not true EAX, which you can only do before Vista)

You can still get hardware-accelerated EAX even on Windows 11 with the right setup. You'll need a card which actually supported it in hardware though, unlike the newer Sound Blasters that simply emulate it. The X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty cards with the EMU20K1/2 chip can still be wrangled into working on Windows 11, which support every version of EAX in hardware.

Realistically it's not worth it for most people. You can get most of the way there with DSOAL and OpenAL. Some things still just don't sound right (or work at all) without original hardware though.

there's a prog called "3DBack" which works even if you don't have discrete sound card. more or less.
but there's a good reason why EAX got dropped. it's buggy as shit and keeps crashing or gives you bluescreen-o-death.

Creative's tech haven't been relevent for decades. and they pretty much left the EAX shit to die and never promote it or shill it to devs, once their soundcards got overtaken for faster CPUs.
Creative literally spent a decade or 2 making crappy chinknese educational tablets in literal china, instead of making soundcards.

MIDI's got more relevent current tech, but most people hate "chiptunes".

I have integrated Realtek chip, so no. I don't think it's supposed to work this way. Tried to supplant dsound.dll from dsoal in place of eax.dll which I believe to be main culprit, and it doesn't seem like it changed anything either; Maybe spatial effect is a bit different? The option is still grayed out.

Disable unwanted effects and throw resulting alsoft.ini into the game folder, that's what I did with obnoxious echo in Thief
