In battle, troops that are standing still will attack before moving troops, which can be very abusable. Other than that, change formations to dodge enemy spells as necessary when their energy bar is high, the Melee command stops you from being able to issue any further orders in exchange for a slight speed/damage increase (and enemy general cannot cast spells or retreat during the one second animation)
Types of troop have advantages against each other like the types in a Pokemon game (Cavalry beats Soldier beats Monk beats Cavalry).
Some generals can defect from your army if their loyalty gets too low (talk to them in during Domestics to get hints about their mood), which can be increased by items and awards, normally, generals won't like it if you don't award them after winning a battle that week, but each faction has four generals who are always loyal and can only played in that faction's scenario (not counting the monarch).
