Folks, I just beat Beyond Oasis and had the time of my life doing so. Let's have a thread about this great little Sega take on the Zelda formula.

well i was planning on beating the game this year anon and you've sealed my choice of doing so
10/10 game and still one of the top genesis rpg's, cozy atmosphere and great controls really made it as you said, a great take on Zelda
loved the combat allowing you to do inputs to get cool moves out

This is the best action adventure of its time. The spritework is so good and the bosses are amazing

>alright, that blonde elf kid with the green shirt and the sword is cool
>let's do that, but uhh, how do we make it seem different?
>i know, just set the game in a weird quasi-middle eastern land where everybody else is brown and the cool blonde kid wears aladdin pants
>anybody have a better idea? no? alright, well fuck it, just run with it. see you on tuesday
i'd like to think the devs were clued into the esoteric knowledge of ancient aryans traveling to all corners of the earth prior to recorded history, but somehow i think this was just the usual jap attempt at being different for the sake of difference alone. the only one of these games that did it right was Alundra, because it shamelessly copied (and often improved upon) the gameplay of 2D zelda instead of trying to fool you with aesthetics. this is all aside from the fact that beyond ogaysis has excruciating amounts of terrible spongey combat too, of course.

Yeah, all six of them.
Game's good with the emergent elemental system and nice graphics, but it is far from the best. It's an overhead action adventure with clunky beat-em-up controls, dissonant music unbecoming of Yuzo Koshiro, and a non-existent story. It was made as a part of Sega's Mega RPG Project but its design runs contrary to RPG character progression, with a ranking system that rewards not picking up power ups. It's a unique game, but deeply flawed.

Are you out of your cotton-pick in’ mind? The game’s loaded with lore, and it’s cinematic as fuck. It starts with the most impressive opening cutscene on the console, and the ending twist recontextualizes the whole game. Yeah, there’s not a ton of in-game dialogue, but that’s what’s good about it.

almost every japanese fantasy LN and OVA in the 80s involved desertic architecture and fashion for some reason (i.e. any yoshitaka amano illustrated book). even the Wizardry OVA made the ye olden medieval city of Llylgamyn look like it was in the middle east. then you have modern Final Fantasy games involving Vril and Hyperborea and Ultima Thule played completely straight

i think it's just a combination of what you said. "wow what's that? sounds cool, ill use it"

That's because it's a dagger.
Later on you can get crossbows, bombs and longswords.

I'd rather six gorgeously-animated, extremely fun bosses over a million boring sword-slashers like in LTTP. Beyond Oasis's gameplay mogs the fuck out of any 2D Zelda, and the fact that the game doesn't overstay its welcome is a point in its favor.
