I recently found this port of Golden Axe and it's not half bad. Very strange movement and gameplay changes but the art style is consistent in its 3D adaptation. I've been looking into ports of these kinds of games and I really liked the steam port of D&D:Chronicles of Mystara.

Turns out there's like a dozen different versions of Golden Axe, what is the best one I should play? Should I just get the direct cabinet rom in MAME so I can have unlimited continues? Or is there a good standalone version out there?

Also beatemup general, in particular I'd love to play some good fantasy ones.

Also really enjoyed games like Gauntlet: Dark Legacy because it's so stylish and crazed with its art direction, which is underrated. But I love a good 2D beatemup with colorful sprites.

Yeah, it's dogshit. The 3D graphics are 90's as fuck in a very technically incompetent way for 2003. The game feels very rough to control and I don't even think the original 2 Golden Axes on Genesis are worth a shit but it makes them look like masterpieces. It feels like they gave a bunch of shitty devs from the Genesis era a chance to update their skillset and they failed miserably. It may be the worst PS2 beat em up with it's lone positive is that it's coop.

Now pretend Golden Axe doesn't exist and play this instead.

The 3D Ages series are comfyjank. As far as interpretations of Golden Axe go you could certainly do worse (like that abysmal PCE version)

>Beat em ups:
The Warriors (top beat em up of the PS2 and the era and obviously you posted it)
Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks
Urban Reign (This one requires a cheat code to unlock co-op and most of the games missions aren't co-op. I'd say about 60 missions are coop, but man, the combat is so good despite the awkward design and there's a 2v2 coop survival mode that's totally worth it if you don't want to go through the campaign)
Die Hard Arcade
Hidden Invasion

>Hack and slash:
King Arthur (has some absolutely great takedown animations)
Eragon (has pretty satisfying throws)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow (it doesn't do anything particularly well like the last two but it's a solid adventure and does some fun pirate things)
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (obvious choice)
Justice League Heroes (Snowblind engine kino, but the NG+ is absolutely awful and felt like they didn't test it)

Not quite the same genre of gameplay but it fits the whole Barbarian milieu and is kind of neat.

You'll have to compromise with whichever platform you choose but Fighting Force is pretty sick.

That game is pure dog shit so don't play it. The fact that it was gonna be SOR4 is crazy in retrospect.
