It's like every single meter square has an enemy in it and not just cannon fodder too, it makes the whole thing a mess and a chore to play so I always go down one skill level when I play that one compared to the original game.
There was a short time when Doom likes thought challenge should be "let's throw in as many enemies as possible", even the prototype versions of Duke Nukem 3D were like that before they rebalanced it for the better. I like to think it was techinical limitations and optimization for it to be playable on 486 that lead to better design but maybe they just smartened up, or it's a bith of both.
