Hot damn, I'm playing this after the Desert Storm games on hard and it is brutal, it feels much harder but I suppose that reflects the contrast between gulf and vietnam wars for burger soldiers. I'm getting gamer PTSD with some of these missions.

DS games were visually easy to read with clean sand dunes and brownish streets, enemies popped out nicely and the levels were quite open and vertical so you had a lot of tactical freedom. Here there's so much foliage and visual bullshit, I'm getting sniped from I don't know where, from behind foliage and the vcs blend in so hard with the environments, on top of constantly popping out of nowhere and random trap holes. They also added a shitload of booby traps and the jungle maps are a nightmare to navigate since everything looks the same and claustrophobic.

The sniper was the most useful guy in DS but here he feels almost useless. I respect they completely switched up the gameplay to adhere to a different war, but this is much less fun. No wonder burgers got rekt so hard in Vietnam.

I have vietcong purple haze on my ps2. It has a lot of short missions and plays like brother in arms

Yeah Vietcong is the real deal. I have played pretty much every Vietnam game from this period, there were loads coming out in mid-2000s despite revisionists telling you otherwise, but Vietcong is the best one by far.
