This is legitimately one of the best retro action games out there, but it seems like no one talks about it because the protagonist looks like a cereal box mascot.

I would put it in Top 3 Genesis games right behind Hard Corps and Streets 2.

The sprite art and ost in that game was gorgeous 2. Shame that all its sequels seemed to take a budget cut.

No one talks about it because it's a Genesis exclusive and the people who owned that console are all dead of fentanyl overdoses.

I stopped caring about any Sonic after the first one. The first game had actual platforming, while all the sequels are just about just about gimmicks and going fast in Rube Goldberg stages. Being able to enter spindash at any time completely neutered the platforming.

Crash is easily the most likable and iconic out of those. I will never forgive how Crash was treated after having 3 of the greatest platformers of all time on the PSX.

I wish I had it as a kid. Playing it as an adult, I mean, yeah it's good, but it doesn't hit the same.
Maybe if I had this game instead of Sonic I wouldn't be an autist and would have a wife and kids today. Thanks Sega

I'm the one guy who enjoys SNES Sparkster the best. RKA is one of those games that feel awesome the first few mins but it's actually pretty shallow and one dimensional.

It's the opposite, it feels shallow the first few minutes, but there is a surprisingly deep and challenging action game on the higher settings as well as a lot of mechanics tech

Charging versus standard attacking adds a lot of depth on its own. That isn't even mentioning how either can have positives or negatives based upon the games design on levels and enemies. Simple and deep is a nice balance. I'm sure there are some old folks here that have developed Pong strategies, and that game you can only go up and down.

Well, I talk about it. RKA is objectively a near-flawless game regardless of personal opinion. Almost every section of it feels justified in some way-- even the shmup sections. Hell, maybe especially the shmup sections. I mean, you DO have a fucking rocket strapped to your back, don't you?

Oh, and the fact that the game's climax happens in space? That desperate final scuffle with the villain? That's about as perfect as it gets.

It's good but the last couple of levels are full of bullshit cheap deaths and limited continues make that really annoying. It's better on replays.

Pig city puts pressure on the player, but it has a shoot em up section that is completely fair with no one hit deaths. When you get inside the fortress it becomes deadly with one hit spikes, robot Pigs with spike shields, and a moving maze room. Then the next level is a shoot em up level, and then the final stage that is almost a boss rush without many surprise gotcha moments. Maybe the second phase of the Axel fight will throw people off their game, but you often start on the pole far right and you can still drop down twice before instant death and you're able to easily get back to a safe spot with your jet pack. Last two levels alone the game is pretty fair.

Well that would be the Sparkster games and not RKA? I didn't see the problems with the Genesis Sparkster game. It wasn't overly fast outside of using the jet pack, but when you're using the jet pack you're pretty much a huge death box. I can't comment on the SNES Sparkster game since I never played it.

I had to get the game after seeing it in magazines. Later I just felt like getting the slight variation with the Japanese version, so I asked two different friends that was going to/already in Japan, and they both found it for me; which is how I ended out with two copies of the Japanese version. The Genesis has so many great games I love that I'd say the game definitely lands in the top 50, but very hard to call top 3 for me. The game is spectacular, and better than the sequels I've played, so it was so good it was hard to top.

>>11857417
Top 50? That seems crazy. Thereโ€™s not that many good games even. Top 10 usually are just Contra, Sonic, Castlevania, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Echo, Phantasy Star, MK2, SF2, Gunstar? Is there really 40 some games better than this one?

The SNES one is a lot closer to the original one on Genesis. I do have odd tastes in games, understandably most people dislike Sega style games, but they definitely vibe with me, so maybe not 40 but possibly 25. Of your list, I would definitely demote Ecco and most certainly MK2 to not even ranking in top 50, likely not even top 100.
