WHY IS IT SO SCARY, I really really liked system shock 1 and was excited to try this and now I think I might drop it from how unnerving it feels to play I don't think I ever feel safe anywhere and it becomes really stressful

I really wanna beat it and like it since I really did enjoy OG system shock but I really hate horror

Yeah it's pretty terrifying, especially the first playthrough. Chemical storage rooms and the elevator are the only 100% safe places I can recall.

What I do when a game is too scary is lowering or even muting the volume when I hear or expect something too freaky.

It was inspired by deep space sci-fi movies from the time, which where all showing off the horrors of deep space. It's way more unnerving than most horror games despite not being explicitly horror. There are 2 audio logs that are burned into my memory from how fucked up they are.

It would be less scary if ammo wasn't so scarce. I have trouble telling whether a Hybrid is carrying a melee weapon or a shotgun, so I usually waste ammo on them.

What weapons should I use a French-Epstein on?
I like using the pistol so far. But I've seen that the shotgun has OP range. I guess ammo count would be the winning factor.

There was actually a part in SS2 where I got mega spooked, I turned around and there was one of those zombie women there FUCK
My memory is terrible though, I barely remember the game and I played it like 2 years ago. I don't know why I even play games I forget them completely in a year's time

Truly a frightening game. The low resources are very important. You are in a very bad situation and have to claw your way out.
The fact that it's much more WASD playable makes it an absolute gemmy.

This one I think is the one everyone thinks of. For me the other one was actually multiple audio logs about the man kidnapping random women like a serial killer to turn them into midwives.

Grenade launcher has the best upgrade (2x damage in its first modification) but that only requires a skill level of 1 so I'd save the Epstein device to max out the shotgun to get rid of it's awful recoil.

That or the laser pistol which makes the charged ammo last almost forever.

I used it on the shotgun. My agility and strength are high enough that I can dance around any Hybrid, smack em down, take their shotgun ammo and stockpile it.

There was a thread about SS2 on /v/ that trudged up some old memories and just how creepy this game was for me growing up, and when you think about it deeply, it still kinda is. The later Shock games felt so far removed from horror, did they even remotely scare people? Being trapped under the sea must suck, but how come the game doesn't play into that?

Bioshock was a little bit scary to me but once I become a walking armoury, it doesn't matter what any game throws at me.
SS2 keeps up the atmosphere very well so far. I've maxed out Standard weapons and switched out the pistol for the rifle like >>11854358 suggested, but the station still feels very lonely.

Do you need to beat System Shock 1 before playing 2? I bought 2 on Steam and it came with the Enhanced version of 1. Tried it, messed with the controls, got the hang of it, but it's so primitive that it isn't that fun. Also it's one of the most unsettling lonely games I've ever played

In the enhanced version there is a button that enables normal full mouse look, which makes the game approximately 100% more accessible.

You don't have to have played it (they give you a recap of the events in the intro) but you will appreciate certain elements more possibly from having played the first one through.

I only recently finished Bioshock for the first time and can say I prefer System Shock 2. SS2 is a lot more unsettling, and the way BS (lol) has been streamlined takes away from the atmosphere. Like the way research works. In SS2 I have to find the right chemicals and the research process takes time. I really didn't like how BS did it. That game has a lot more polish and streamlining but good horror doesn't need that.

I played 1 a few weeks ago before playing 2 right now. As other anon says, full mouse look button (E key) makes it more accessible. Shodan in 2 has more impact if you play 1 first.

Midwives don't birth babies, they look after the parent's baby, hence mid-wife. The cyborg midwives were cybernetically enhanced in order to withstand the toxins that the annelids and the eggs were producing, and look after them without the body being destroyed entirely.
>>11862109
Well Marine is bugged in Anniversary Edition and you get -1 Standard Weapon skill under what you should end up with in the original game, so not them. If it's your first time I'd suggest Navy anyway, it's the best all-rounder jack of all trades while the OSA is for gamers on their third playthrough wanting to experiment with the spells, generally.

I can perfectly recall scenes from my past in vivid detail (and often do so when whacking off). I'm an avid reader and can envision characters, scenes, and worlds. At the same time, there isn't a way that a video game could make me feel fear.

Do you actually get scared by Halloween decorations, assuming they are very realistic? If not, why not? It's the same damn thing.

Not at all. My many are fears are based in potential negative consequences for me or my loved ones. There are a million things to be legitimately scared by in this fallen world. System shock is not one of them.

Letting a sp00ky video game scare you to the point that you can't enjoy the game is beyond fragility imo. It's laughable.
