>Platforming game where all the jumps are easy because of the hover
>Sidescrolling shooter where you cant manually aim your shots
>Collectathon where your character builds up tons of speed and can't stop on a dime so slowing down to explore nooks and toss eggs at random shit

The game looks and sounds really good, but I kind of fucking hate it so far. What am I missing that makes it so beloved. No, I'm serious - I know usually this is just a shizo ritualpost or a stealth attempt to talk about a game you like but I really want people to explain what I'm not getting with this one

i mean, i disagree about the visuals - i don't like the aesthetics of this game at all - but otherwise i'm right there with you, OP.

i just find the game to be somehow far too easy to really be fun, despite the fiddly controls. it's a real step backwards in every way from world.

i can still kind of se what they were going for, though, and they perfected it in story. island was just a weird experiment that didn't yield the fruit they wanted.

I hate this game so much. Mechanically it’s not bad. Visually it’s interesting. But it’s just not Mario. You’re supposed to explore and do these little challenges and throw shit around for crappy puzzles. But that’s not fucking Mario. I just want to run and jump and stomp shit and slide down a flag. It’s weird how much this game sucks. Mario 64 they returned to the formula but in 3D and it’s great. My only explanation is they must have realized it was trash and added the Mario World title to trick kids into buying it as a sequel.

I had played story before this one and for all my complaints about island it makes story look like a piece of shit. I'd rather play a character who is a little too fast to be constantly stopping to grab red coins then play a character whos just slow all the time and has to slowly sniff out treasure while keeping the exact same hover jump/egg throwing from this game

It definitely sucks. Worst sequel to Super Mario World. It doesn't look or play like the original. I was expecting something cooler, not this cry baby simulator.

If you could save your progress with collected items it would have been a better game. Having to do perfect runs drains the fun out of it.

Mario 64 is not a run to the flag game zoomie, it's more of a collectathon than yoshis island. You have to replay levels to find new the red coins, the hundred coins, the path to the 4th star that requires a cannon. Now to me neither Yoshis island or Mario 64 are bad games, but they are giant departures. I would even go as far to say that Mario 64 is a bigger departure than Yoshis island

DKC mogs this shit incredibly hard. If it wasn't for the cutesy visuals, no one would remember it. It's kinda like the Wind Waker of the 16 bit era.

most of the stars in mario 64 are athletic challenges, you arent literally running to a goalpost because that doesn't make as much sense in a 3D level but you're almost never coming to a complete stop and throwing shit at the ground like yoshi's island. even the red coins are usually part of some obstacle course rather then a hidden treasure the way they are in yoshi

yoshis island is so obviously SUPPOSED to be the answer to "whats greatest platformer of all time next to DKC2?"

the graphics, the charm, the gameplay variety, the secrets, the bonuses, its just so diverse and big and beautiful. as a kid this game absolutely blew my mind getting 100 on every level and getting watermelon equipment up the ass. Trihex era also showed what a great game this is.

But the funny thing is, in practicality, theres a lot of "burden" to playing this game. the baby crying is just the beginning. it can feel not fluid, frustrating, too many vehicle sections that slow things down, and other things.

but mathematically, second or third best platformer all time next to mario 3 and dkc 2

My point wasn't that Mario 64 was like yoshis island anon, my point was they are both giant departures from the SMB formula

I don't think you're failing to "get" much of anything. It's more about taste. The game does have a rich set of mechanics, and some people will love playing around with them. It has a very rich audiovisual style and some people will love it for that. It gives the player lots to do, so people who like it will find lots of reasons to keep coming back to it and deepening their attachment to it. It's much too easy and many of its tougher challenges are too irritating (not difficult, but irritating), so skilled players will be turned off except in the unlikely case that they can develop a taste for artificial challenge runs (i.e., speedrunning). And apparently the crying baby turns off unskilled players. So you'd have to be somewhat special yourself, and not in an inherently good way, to really love this game, as beautiful as it is in some respects. It's a game that's easier to respect than it is to enjoy, unless you're a little kid with a kid's low standards I guess.

Oh and I guess my answer to your question of why the game is so "beloved" is buried in there: Some people played it as kids and so were able to love it, never noticing its flaws (as with the similarly deeply flawed classic Secret of Mana, though that game isn't nearly as polished as this one is), and some people with the weird tastes needed to love the game as competent adults are unusually loud about their fandom of it. So it's a mixture of nostalgia and vocal weirdos. I mean I haven't done any research to back this up but that's my guess.

The thing about nostalgia though is that it absolutely works. Nostalgia can easily turn a 7/10 game into a 9/10 game, even if objectively many 8/10 games mog it.

It has tons of variety and like 50 long levels with tons of stuff in them. Is it superior to SMW? Probably not. But it's still superior to 99% of all SNES games. The average SNES game is fucking 40 minutes long, while this one can easily take up 10 hours. It's good content for the money.

False. And wouldn't be a problem otherwise.
By this logic rpgs are the best games in the system, regardless of the quality.
Everything is free now. No need to jugde stuff by their price.

What I like about it is appreciating the craftmanship that went into it. The level design and all the little details.

It's a bit slow in places, so if you are in a rush then I can see how it might be irritating. But, imagine you are a child with infinite time to spend and the complaint goes away.
