What went wrong with the Parappa franchise?

Maybe it's the ps1 having 20 different mascots
Crash laid dormant for years and then came back so maybe Parappa ain't dead

No one knows how to fucking play it

If you ask 100 people about what was PS1's mascot, they'll say Crash, Spyro, Medievil, Klonoa, Croc, Gex, hell, even Vib Ribbon will come to mind before PaRappa.

Lammy didn't really sell well, which it was never going to, and that was basically the end. Matsuura and Greenblat are creative types and didn't really wanna make sequels, which I think is why Parappa 2 is such a mindless shitpost of a game. Based on his appearance in sony smash I don't think a reboot would've been handled well at all.

Probably a brainlet opinion, but rhythm games need cool art styles and characters to really shine. A rhythm game without these elements feels lame. That's probably why I never got into osu!

Spryo and Crash absolutely would be competitors for the role.
The other ones, not so much. The Twisted Metal clown has a better shot. Klonoa has a lot of fans, I never really heard anyone talk about Medieval irl. Parappa is way more known, even in the 00's when he died down. I don't know whatever world he lives in if Medieval was more popular

This game is great but it doesn’t explain how to play it very well, even in the manual. I think a lot of people don’t get past the second level. It’s not hard, but people try to play it like DDR and then they just lose and lose interest.
A reboot would benefit from having more stages, even if it meant reusing assets.

Greenblat has gone on record saying that he'd have loved to make Parappa a Mario-esque franchise, but poor reception to 2 pretty much ended that idea. He's also not a fan of the anime series.
