What's the deal with the Japs region locking everything?

Media released officially in Japan was often more expensive than importing foreign version of the same media. Local publishers had to find ways of convincing Japanese customers to buy local releases. For example, music albums (which had no region locks at all) often had extra songs on Japanese pressings. Region locks were a more blunt and effective solution to the importing problem.
