I have a Steam Deck I can use to emulate them, what's the bare minimum I'd hypothetically need (controllers, etc) if I wanted to take it around with me to a friend's place, hook it up to their TV, and play lightgun games together?

You mean arcade games on MAME? It's either not possible or such a huge pain in the ass that it's not worth it. You can just play console games that support regular controls like Time Crisis for the PS1 if that's what you mean by 'the bare minimum'

wiimote and sensor bar. it's not very accurate compared to proper light gun controllers, but it's very portable, cheap and connects via your 'eck's bluetooth.

You need a CRT

It feels like it should be easy to solve the lightgun shit, and it probably is, it's just that it's something that so little people want, so they're not gonna mass-produce a solution even though it probably wouldn't be that hard

Or not even try, since the T-Rex will force you to lose 3/4th of your health even with perfect play.

Not a light gun. That only works in emulators with mouse conversion mods on light gun games. A real light gun requires a CRT

Minimum:
Mouse

That's how PC ports of light gun games were played back then.

You're essentially producing hardware for a very niche audience. Not only for people that like retro games, but arcade styled ones as well.

I know there are "light guns" that work by looking at the screen itself so they will work with a LCD, but they are not plug-and-play and require calibration, and I am not sure if their software will run on a Steam Deck.

Jurassic Park is not a light gun game. The controllers worked like gun shaped joysticks.

The OP asked how to play lightgun GAMES, not how to use real lightguns on a real CRT.

i just go to the bar with a friend and play all of them to the end because tokens are ten cents on thursdays, if people haven't already given me their extras on the way out, and i know i'd get bored with those games pretty quick at home. there's also venues with freeplay arcades where i don't even bother with the light guns

2x OpenFIRE for an open-source DIY solution. 2x Gun4IR with a copy of the software license for a closed-source one. (but i've heard at least one guy switch to OpenFIRE over bugs not getting fixed and calling it "dead" so ymmv)
Both need IR LEDs attached to the big screen you'll be aiming at and calibration with some emulator setup.

I looked at recent updates and it looks like the OpenFIRE guys have had basic support merged into the Mister and are considering selling finished lightguns and IR emitters?
Would probably cost a bit but might save money overall if you like me live in a country where you get assraped on surcharges by ordering from ali/the US.
I was considering making a zapper-type light gun without solenoids since that'd be like 30 bucks not counting the filament for a 3D printer but I guess i'll wait and see since I really wasn't looking forward to soldering IR-emitter boards.

Seeing as people seem to be getting het up over semantics, how about -

I want to play light gun games with a pretend gun - using lightgun tech, or bluetooth, or whatever that fires at the screen I'm playing on - rather than a mouse or touchscreen. Apart from the original tech and a CRT, what do I need to do this, and what games are supported?

if that works in retroarc it should be no problem. I got a retroarch folder copy just for sinden (lightgun) games.

If you ever setup retroarch for a custom controller (for example sinden) first make a copy of your old retroarch folder and add _sinden to the folder name. This way you will never have to change setup for each game and controller. You just got a retroarch for each setup. It's really awesome this way. Hassle begone!

You can literally do nothing but press start on continue screens and the game will eventually reach the ending, the bosses' health drains automatically
