Constantly see this game heralded as one of the greats, at least one of them ends up on every 'top RPGs of all time' list. Seemed like required playing, along with Xenogears and Wild Arms. Yet my reaction with this game is exactly the same as my reaction with those two games: it's just another fucking jrpg. I can swear I've already played this. Admittedly I'm only 20 minutes into the game but that's all it took. I'm wondering if I should carry on with this probably 80+ hour game. Is anything here unique or worth pushing on for?

I've only played the first game, but it is very underwhelming for the amount of praise it gets. The battle system is very basic. You will primarily use basic attacks and healing items for most of the game, and the nature of your magic gems that grant you magic gives you a limited usage of spell charges so you end up saving those to dump onto bosses. Customization is almost basic outside of the ability to allocate spell gems to characters. You have an item on a character and you pay a blacksmith to linearly upgrade your equipment.

The positives are that the game is breezy, very little need to grind. It's short, clocking in around 20~25 hours. If you like collecting characters, well there's a ton of them for you. If you want a simplistic RPG to turn your brain off to.

If you need something to hook you mechanically like battle mechanics, character customization, how characters develop mechanically, or alternative ways to progress through the game then you will be sorely disappointed with Suikoden.

Saw my roommate playing it. I think people like the huge character roster and it makes you feel like the leader of an army and gives you a base of operations where your people live. The magic animations aren't bad and he played the gambling minigame a lot

Oh so that's it, there's a bunch of units to collect. That adds some flavor at least tho not intrinsically different from just being able to customize a core party with some sort of job system. Except you have to level up each character individually (I'm assuming). If the games really that short I suppose it may be worth it.

[Maybe I'm just growing out of turn based RPGs]

Yeah. The biggest difference among characters is if they have a short, medium, or long reach with their weapons to determine if they'll be placed in front or back ranks, and certain character combos have their own skill. Most of the game you won't be utilizing those skills because you lack that combination of characters.

Not sure what you're exactly seeking with JRPGs. Personally my favorite one on the PS1 is SaGa Frontier, but that often turns off typical fans due to no tutorials on explaining its various mechanics, very little guidance on how to progress at times leaving the initiative with the player, and grappling with character growth mechanics with four races that all develop through differing methods.

The feeling of gathering an army along with a relatively quick and straightforward battle system are the best parts in my opinion. If you don't enjoy seeing the base grow over time and unlocking new features by recruiting characters, the game probably just isn't for you. Spritework and music are pretty good too but not the best for the genre on the system

the easiest way to get consistent praise is to simply not have major flaws/problems. never played it myself, but from what i hear, its simple enough that its difficult to really fuck up. so it provided a clean experience, and the nostalgia carries it. by not being bad, its automatically "good" to most people, even if its not "great". thats about it.

You're going through the video game equivalent of the Oedipus complex and you've seen it a thousand times here. You think dismissing all the classics of your fathers makes you and your taste grow by opposition, but what you don't realize is that on the contrary it makes you shallow for not being able to appreciate things for what they are, especially when your opinion is based on "I've played for 5 mins"

if you want the polar opposite from a turn based rpg play tactics ogre luct. the psp remake with the fan mod is the definitive way to play the game. great story, huge mechanical depth, well balanced without a firm 'meta', etc. the main story is a chill casual playthrough that doesn't necessitate knowing the full depth of the game mechanics but the game has ng+, a huge amount of side content and a lot of post-game content that actually does require and reward knowing how the game works. fan mod's actively developed and gets regular updates still to this day.
playthroughs slowly introduce mechanics and the game starts to take off and battles become way more fun around chapter 2-3. new players should be told you're meant to recruit a lot and you can recruit monsters. fan mod has more classes than slots the cartridge can support in the party menu and everything except 1 class is good.
tactics ogre luct+fanmod is probably the peak of these classic turn based rpg's unless you play entirely for story. even then though the story on its own is a strong entry.

Dude you parade your deference to older people around relentlessly in this thread. You're a baby. Don't pretend you're above all this and just laughing knowingly about it after spending most of your posts in the thread getting all prickly because the people you view as your superiors reacted negatively to your shallow opinion. If you were above it all, if you were anything but an insecure ACTUAL baby, then you wouldn't be so threatened by the merely figurative man-babies here that you need to constantly honor their replies with this show of "punching up" at them. And you would actually TALK ABOUT THE GAME.

Grow up and respect yourself enough to ignore this repetitive nonsense. You can perceive "just another JRPG" but you can't perceive "just another kid with low self-awareness" yet. Change that.

>TALK ABOUT THE GAME

I don't know if you want me to talk about Suikoden or MGS. They're both "fine". They are both without apparent flaw. Metal Gear Solid is the most basic 3D stealth game, for some reason it gave all you 80s babies sexual awakenings now you can't cum unless you're thinking about Hideo Kojima, a man who I'm convinced actually hates video games and gamers. He made a 100 hour errand simulator just because he knew you retards would be chomping at the bit to play it. MGS has nothing interesting to say except "war bad". It's not even worth critique it's just a game that isn't terrible.

>the people you view as your superiors reacted negatively to your shallow opinion

Shallow because it's not your opinion. All I said was MGS was a disappointment to me, and was struck by insults to my intelligence and maturity by insecure man children and when I respond to their insults in kind I'm called out. I'm not self aware? Of course not.
