Recently replayed the REs and Alone in the Dark and it was kino.

They're good but I'm tired of the revisionist history classic RE fans try to push about 4 killing the franchise. 4 changed directions because the franchise was widely regarded as getting stagnant and if Capcom kept making classic styled games the franchise would've died an entry or two later. I beat RE2 recently for the first time - having only played the demo as a kid and being too freaked out by it to continue. It was more of a cathartic way to prove to myself I could do it, and I really enjoyed it.

Started RE1, haven't enjoyed it as much. I feel like they did a better job of designing the Police Station to make it feel a bit less samey than the mansion.

I'll bite, Yes the franchise was stagnant and SH1 made a massive blow on the genre that they didn't find the way to approach the franchise to keep it fresh. With their desperation goes as far as CV even borrowing stuff from games like Parasite Eve or even the Clock Tower games.
I can't in the right mind, accept that RE4 schlock while humorous, fun and action packed Austin Powers meets Resident Evil slop became the identity of the franchise onwards. At the time of release it carried the burden of the lore and the experience of the previous games. And this made an impact on how the people that followed this games closely perceived RE4 on time of release. You talk about revisionism? People never talk about the schism that RE4 made in the audience of these games in the time of release. Because people talk about "new direction" was in essence an entire different franchise that slapped the on the brand on it's name.

I enjoyed RE2R with the classic music, it made me at least use my nostalgia and imagination for a moment putting a spell on me attempting to look it past it's flaws, but I hated how it stripped out the soul of the original through character assassination and all the remakes did is, Nuking the B Scenario from Orbit didn't helped either in RE2R. The only recent RE game that I genuinely enjoyed 100% was Village, it wore it's heart on the sleeve at least compared to the rest of the games since RE4.

I don't really feel the appeal to them. They're not particularly scary, not by any measure. The plot is pretty basic and cheesy, as are the characters. They're not that difficult, and you're inundated with so many supplies that you don't have to worry too much about backing off from danger or pushing to where things might be in order to survive. Combat is pretty shallow as well, as there's not much risk or personal choice in tactics/execution to be done with encounters with most enemies; hell, enemies like Hunters basically exist solely to stop you from just lazily facetanking until you fall asleep, but then they still don't have much going on with actually fighting them either.

Unless you're part of the Svengoolie crowd or are particularly grabbed by their genuinely fantastic atmosphere, I just don't really get why anyone would continue to put value in these games beyond historical context.

If you want to feel like you have some kind of niche interest maybe you should go play some niche games instead of extremely popular well-known and established franchises. Resident Evil and Silent Hill are THE entry-level survival horror games and people still love all of them, including (and especially, honestly) the original trilogies.

Just a heads up: If there's a funkopop of the thing you like, it didn't filter zoomers and it's not "niche".
