On the whole I think I like the 16-bit trilogy better on average than the 32-bit one, but I assume somebody contrarian enough may put the original 8-bit trilogy above either.

NES: well balanced, actual dungeon crawling, forward thinking and influencial designs while everyone else was copy pasting Wizardry/Ultima/DQ
SNES: this is when balance started going out of the window and they made the games too easy. FF4's ATB was nice but in terms of influence it did more good than harm. This is also the era when they started retreading known territories, the story in 4 taking so many cues from 2, the game system in 5 from 3
PSX: FF8 carries the trilogy on its shoulder. The PSX JRPG era was all about experimentation and subverting the tropes and FF8 is the epitome of that, a game system that punishes those who just want to spam A to win, and a story which appears to be a fairy tale at first but which in fact makes one question the whole concept of categorazing everything into "Good vs Evil" which most JRPGs were about. Excellent presentation and overall the perfect story, characters and setting for teenagers at the time. No other Final Fantasy understood its target audiance as well.
>>11857868Nah, X is too linear and weird to be comparable to classic FF at its best but I agree it's a nice game and certainly less of a disappointment than IX
>>11857856 (OP)6-8 are edgy woke Nietzschean trash, 1-5 + 9 are the best.
>SSS: VII VIII
>S: VI X
>A: V IX
>B: I IV
>C: II III
>F: XII, every modern entry
ps1 trilogy wins, even though snes is close. lmao@ the retard who actually thinks the NES games were the peak.
>>11857927he is a IX fag, there is no reasoning to be had he just has shit taste, simple as.
>>11857856 (OP)without the ps1 trilogy absolutely no one but a handful of weebs would give a shit about this series so theres your answer.
>>11857856 (OP)Without the NES trilogy no other games would have been made so there's your answer
>>11857953Not true. FF1 and the GB FFs were in Nintendo Power's tops for a long time (players, sellers and overall)
>>11857985Shit I could have contrarian posted and thrown the legend series on here. Good catch anon
PS1 trilogy by far
Actually it's the greatest trilogy in video game history and 3 of the best J-RPG of all time (7 being number 1)
Any other opinion is a contrarian hipster
>>11857856 (OP)>3>4>5>6>7>8Everything else is ketchup and mustard
>>11857856 (OP)IV is my favourite individual title but VII-VIII-IX is the best trilogy, though IX is definitely the weakest of the three
>>11857868Fpwp. 789 are the gold standard, but 10 is absolute chinkbrain dogshit and the worst final fantasy (everything after 10 is not final fantasy)xhagjv

>>11857914>6-8 are edgy woke Nietzschean trashabsurd nonsense comment that has absolutely 0 understanding of philosophy.
>>11857856 (OP)i wouldn't considerem trilogies really
to some extent iv and vii stand closer than v and iv for example

>>11857868I played every mainline game in order as an adult, 10 is probably the 3rd worst game (beaten only by 13 and 15, notretro)
Unless you played it as a kid and have nostalgic attachment, or are way invested in cheesy love stories, I really don't know how it's so beloved.
