>"you see, Ogre has killed all these Tekken 2 characters, absorbed their souls and now uses their signature moves"
>later Tekkens
>"uh, ackshyally he didn't kill them, they are alive and we're bringing them back because we have no balls to kill the characters off"
That was lame

It's a fighting game. The playable characters should always take precedence over whatever lame story they came up with to add flavour.

I cringe whenever someone brings up the story and lore of Mortal Kombat, even though I know Midway put a lot of effort into pretending anyone would give a shit about MK's story with the comics and Mythologies.

People do care about MKs story, it's what like 80 percent of the fanbase cares about most.

Gen-Z doesn't get this because they weren't alive in the 90s despite being obsessed with pretending they were, the difference between MK and other fighting games is that they SUCCESSFULLY turned their series into multi-media, the 1995 movie alone is one of the staple 90s kid nostalgia films. SF tried, but failed, really only getting anime fans into it which wasn't as big of a kid's niche as it became by the 00s post-Toonami.

Also, nobody really cares about characters dying and coming back to life, if you ever read a comic book (which matters, if you're American and were born before 1995) you were already used to this shit. TMNT brought back Shredder, nobody cared, we weren't obsessed with continuity and "lore"

Ogre is kinda lame to me in general, Tekken had cool looking characters but never a really cool final boss other than DevilKaz. Devil oddly fit in with Tekken's homage style that ripped off plenty of shit just like MK did, but Ogre being this supernatural Aztec deity seemed out of place in the series which leaned more to scifi than anything, Devil plotline aside

None of Tekken final bosses are scifi.
>Heihachi
>Devil
>Ogre
>Unknown
>Jinpachi

>Kazumi
Neither is Tekken itself. It only has some mild scifi elements like most other fighting games

What I mean is it leans more to scifi than fantasy/supernatural, aside from devil/angel and ogre, but while devil is a devilman ripoff and kinda fits with Tekken ripping off/homaging other media, including anime, Ogre seems totally out of place with the themes of the series

Ogre is cool. Partially a Cell rip off, partially an amalgamation of the 1990s sci fi tropes about ancient aliens building pyramids on earth.

I get what you mean, with Tekken even all the supernatural elements feel "Japanese" in a way, even their conceptions of devils and angels have an almost visual kei feel so while not necessarily ancient/feudal Japan it does have a modern Japanese vibe. The Aztec look detracts a bit from it. It's done pretty well in part two of JoJo but those series are meant to evoke different cultures/genres/themes so it works.

True but the story shouldn't stomp all over the characters then. If characters might ever be brought back then they shouldn't be killed in the first place. What OP described is definitely lame, and could easily have been avoided. (Characters whose gimmick is that they copy moves from other characters are always lame anyway and should never ever exist.)

It was just an excuse to have Tekken 3's cast be mostly new characters. It's weird when you think about it, a lot of fighting games at the time usually get criticized for shaking up the roster too much, but Tekken 3 is about the only one that gets outright praise for it.

That's because T3 cast was straight up upgrade. Jin had new cool moves over Kaz. Same about Julia and Michelle, Forest and Marshall, King 2 and King, Hwoarang and Baek, Bryan and Bruce, Gunjack and Jack 2. Plus, they solved the issue of clone characters. Kunimitsu was mostly just a fem Yoshimitsu. Wang was a male Chang, Devil was Kaz with lasers, P. Jack was Jack 2 with couple of different moves 2. AK was the most unique clone because the addition of Mishima moves makes his playstyle different from regular King - maybe the only character missing from T3 cast.
When Namco added missing T2 characters back to Tag, they had to come up with new moves for them so that the cast didn't feel like too much clones.
In Street Fighter terms, everyone was cool with Charlie in Alpha. Guile was a fan favorite but Charlie was a good substitute. But then with SF3 when vanilla didn't even had Chun Li people were not happy.

I was there, perhaps youre in your 40s though. I was a kid mid 90s, and nobody gave a shit about Tekken, it was still all about SF and MK, Tekken boomed with 3 in my demographic

Tekken honestly confuses me too, because despite it having eventually boomed, it's still not iconic, nobody can name any Tekken characters unless theyre fans but every girl talks about MK because their brother played it, everyone shouts HADOOOOKEN and knows ryu/ken, Tekken despite selling a lot, is totally foreign to casuals still
