I was really young so I don't know how we got the game on our 386 exactly (probably my older brother got it off a friend or one of my cousins), but it has a copy-protection scheme where you had to go to a page in the manual and then pick the Simpsons character that was on that page, and we didn't have said manual, so I'd just keep trying to open it and pick characters at random until it finally worked. I'd savor the few times I actually got to go in-game.

I honestly really enjoyed it. I had other choices since I had DOS-based emulators as well, but sometimes playing weird DOS games scratched that itch

Look, it's fine if you want to keep nostalgiaposting about dogshit like Tyrian just because you happened to like dicking around with it as a kid, but that doesn't mean you actually have to pretend that it's a good game.

It came on a CD with about 200 games. The games were categorized into good/ok/bad by a total fag who put anything that took more than 2 IQ to play into the worst category. For example shining force 2 was in there. On second thought I think the maker just didn't even know english.

Early Simpsons was weird as fuck. IIRC some of the shit you see in the game were concepts that didn't even make it into the show itself (Marge having rabbit ears hidden under her hair, for example).

It doesn't matter what his favorite game is, it doesn't change the quality of Tyrian as a game.
If you want to disprove him, you need to actually show that Tyrian is good

That's how I broke the Larry 1 child-protection when I was 12, by writing down every question and trying different answers until one worked. Same for 688 Attack Sub.

nta but that's not how it works. OP didn't give any arguments of why the game sucks, what is there to disprove? If you can't articulate why something is bad or good, your opinion is irrelevant. That's a problem this whole site has, kids come here, drop an unfunded comment and expect everyone else to just nod.

Most people didn't have internet access in the DOS era. They had to rely on whatever they could obtain on physical media. Piracy was rampant but it wasn't "effortless" the way it is now.

Words have meanings, and however you feel about Tyrian's game design, it has more than enough artistic and technical effort put into it to not qualify as shovelware. Shovelware isn't just a game you don't like or even an objectively bad one. It's zero effort shit that's either barely functional or barely even a game to begin with, that has no reason to exist but to make a quick buck. Pic related, this game has one awful droning music track, trivial, tedious gameplay, shitty art, no variety or level design whatsoever, and this piece of shit came out in 1994 so there's not even any chance of technical merit. There was tons of garbage like this in the shareware era. Tyrian's not great, but it's far above the average for its time and platform.
