Is this game worth finishing? I've heard its a boring slog later on but can't confirm that's just side quests. Can you complete the game without doing side content or is it mandatory? I finished the 4 characters stories and just got the 4 mediums btw. Im not a huge JRPG fan, mostly normie stuff like Skies of Arcadia and FFX I like

You have four more dungeons until the end of the first chapter. If you're not enjoying the game by then, I doubt the rest of it will be any better for you.

WA3 consists of four story arcs, some of which are pretty damn long (I remember second one with the "scientists" being a very long slog), and you basically finished tutorial and just started first arc.

IIRC at some point during the third arc (maybe it was the second one) you'll need a bunch of dragon fossils and usually you get them one by one by exploring the map, doing side-quests and I think doing horseback fights. But I think there was either some boss fight or some side-quest that gvae you a bunch of those (like 30 or something) which was enough to progress through the story. Otherwise I don't remember side-quests being vital to beat the game - if anything, you might get bored just by amount of dungeons you'll have to go through in main story.
Abyss sucks balls btw

I feel like WA1 or WA2 will work better for you as long as you're fine with PS1 graphics and non-Wild West setting. WA1 goes well if you enjoyed Chrono Trigger and WA2 goes well if you enjoy super sentai genre.
