Racing General/Suggestion Thread
I'm looking to play for Retro Racers, but I'm not sure where to begin outside of the major mainstays of the genre. What racing games would you guys suggest good or awful?

The Monster Jam games on PS2 are pretty cool, I think they have racing modes as well as different destruction modes where you just break shit.

V rally 2, ps1. surprisingly decent, also has a track editor.
Also Burning Road, obscure Daytona ripoff but the handling seemed strange, couldnt tell if it was an emulation issue

Whiplash aka Fatal Racing is my favorite racing game ever made. There's nothing else quite like it. It's got crazy stunts like trackmania, loops and corkscrews and more, but it's also a combat endurance racer where you are encouraged to wreck the other cars. Car manufacturers run a team of two cars just like le mans or f1 and the AI does crazy shit I have only seen players do like drive through the pits at top speed to try and wreck people trying to repair or if one car on a team is doing particularly poorly the AI might decide that the best thing for the team is to turn around and drive the track backwards just to wreck people. There is zero rubber banding, cars will be on completely different laps by the end of the race, pit strategy is very important to win on the hardest difficulties. Supports 2 player split screen and 16 player network multiplayer, in 1995!

I am also working on decompiling it so it can run natively on modern machines without DOSbox. Currently I have keyboard input, sound and midi, and a software rendering pipeline in place. Doesn't go past the main menu yet but I do have an untextured 3D software rendered rotating car on screen.

I started PSX ChoroQ after your post, the one that was released as Penny Racers in Europe. The starter car barely turns, it's not even understeer, it's more like nosteer. Until you just spin out that is. Am I missing some tuning options, or is it just how things are?
Anonymous No.11865694 >>11865832
>>11865681
I think that's just the way it is until you upgrade your car; but first you need to get the manual transmission upgrade (the game teaches you early on that you have a better top speed with it and that it's much easier to win with manual). It gets better after that; though I think each sequel improves on the last. Also iirc fyi beating the championship once isn't the end of things, if you go at it again you'll get new tracks eventually.

What, a silky 35Hz is not good enough for you? It actually can also run at 50 and 70Hz but these are cheat modes that make the entire game run faster. All the logic is based on a 35Hz refresh rate. Once I finish the decomp I will fork the repo and work on things like proper game clock delta time. That should be a very easy update.
Anonymous No.11865963
i really like the midnight club games because you can upgrade your car's performance and cosmetics. what other racing games are like that?

that would probably explain why it always ran shit for me. I thought it was my pc, then tried again after an upgrade and it was still chuggy. IIRC it was in that wierd period where some stuff didnt get 3dfx ports/patches so I assumed my cpu wasnt good enough.
Anonymous No.11866127
>>11866069
There is a 3dfx version too, it seems slightly incomplete though. The menus are unchanged, the same software rendered ones, and the overlay in-game is incredibly simplified, just some text and bars. It's also kind of ugly.

help me bros, Im trying to play colin mcrae rally and my gearshift is fucked for some reason

>plug in wheel(logitech gt)
>wheel turns to center itself, detected in the game, I barely have to adjsut anything in settings
>I have a gearshift on this wheel, it detects when Im shifting up or down on it, hence shifter back/forwards being read in button assignments
>startying rally school I can shift up jsut fine, always registers
>I cannot downshift at all
>I can go into settings, input how to register downshift everytime with the lever, no errors ever pop up
>the second I start a course, it never reads the input again, even though its still assigned in settings

what do?

Gave it another go and it's just too frustrating. I can't get a grip on handling, one second I can't make a mildest turn, the next one I'm spinning out on a straight.
Spent an hour in the GameCube one and had fun, even despite Mario Kart items bullshit.

The snow track is absolutely deranged, there's no way one could enjoy it. School one also isn't great with all the random sharp turns. Reminds me of M&Ms Kart Racing.
But on the other hand I unlocked the 787B body and it makes me very happy.

If people are actually tryharding these games as you suggest it's surely only because they are popular games that fit well into established arcade high score attack template.
All these scanline effect sprite scaler racers offer delightful show but the mechanics are frustrating and have no substance.
