I've never even heard of Media Play, and pretty sure I haven't heard of Wherehouse Music but I might have just forgotten.

Also not sure if Funcoland counts as not being around since they just changed their name.

One of the best games of the 90s, and this is the best they could think of to market it. If it wasn't for the rave reviews and good word of mouth, it would've sold like absolute shit.

mostly because it took them forever to even bring out FF1. 87 in Japan but 90 here. By then they were already gearing up for the SNES. An attempt was made to port II but I doubt they would have touched III, V was skipped because they didn't think Americans could handle the Job system. Instead they were thinking of making a PC port and calling it Final Fantasy Extreme because lol only PC nerds could handle it

By the time FFI was brought over to the states, FFIII was just launched in Japan. The NES was also being rapidly eclipsed by the new 16-bit hardware coming out, and Square didn't want to waste its limited resources translating old games for a dying platform. They made the decision to just translate FFIV and release it instead. I think it was Nintendo of America's decision to name it II rather than IV in order to avoid confusion.

An attempt was made. There's a promotional poster for CES 1991 floating around showing concept box art for FFII and FFIII. FFII was about halfway translated when the decision was made to cancel it.

Truth. I remember pouring over screenshots on the back on game boxes, inside game magazines, etc.

It was a big deal. We didn't have the internet in the early '90s. It might be our only exposure to this game that we ever had. Not every game had commercials. Not every game was in the rental store or at our friends houses.

FF2 translation was 90% done and planned for release; while they were talking about releasing FF3 on NES down the line as well. Then in a matter of months they did a 180 on that.

I have a schizo theory that Nintendo of US prevented the release of FF2 (and by extension, 3) on NES out of spite for Square not going through them for the publishing anymore (FF1 but also Rad Racer and 3-D World Runner were published by Nintendo in the US and were all best sellers, then Square sat up shop in the US) and because they were afraid they could out perform them.
For the SNES they needed all the chips they could get to make customers buy a new console (the SFC had a very slow first year in the Japan so the US branch had an example not to follow) they wouldn't have bothered FF4's release.

I always thought it was weird how carts were marketed as being lightning-fast compared to CDs, but then you find out games like Super Mario 64 were only 8-megabytes. The only way something like Resident Evil 2 was able to get an N64 port was by compressing the absolute fuck out of everything to fit on a 64-megabyte cart.
