In the long run, no. Maybe for its time, it could've done its job to some degree, but as of right now it's never been easier to pirate GameCube games. Especially with the state of Wii softmodding making the GameCube's immediate successor the perfect device for ripping them. The fact you can look up virtually any game you want and download it from some site hosting it or in the case of some other consoles you can play the games directly in your browser without even having to download anything to begin with. I wouldn't say that necessarily makes the miniDVDs any less charming and unique though. I like that games often took advantage of different storage media over the years. It's always interesting to reflect on the state of the industry at that time through direct design decisions such as this one and it's always fun when I go back to play my GameCube.

No. Anyone clever enough to get a mod chip or swap disc would be clever enough to take the top of the shell off or cut the dvdr down to size. I'm sure at some point someone started making shells that would fit a full size disc. I know as early as 2006 you could get a flip top shell for a ps2 so you didn't have to use a paper clip to pull the tray out. I'm sure gamecube eventually got something to make swapping easier and less destructive but I had no interest in it.

The best anti piracy feature it had was not having games worth pirating as well as it being much easier to pirate games on the other 6th gen consoles.

>I had no idea there was zero protection.
Nobody here ever said that. Of course it had protection, only some of the earliest CD systems and add-ons didn't. We was just saying that the Mini-DVD format was not protection in and of itself, nor was it even something new as blank mini-DVDs were a thing that some camcorders used at the time.

You would still need a modchip (pretty sure softmods didn't exist back then) to run burned games regardless of if you was using a mini-dvd, a dvd cut to mini size, or had taken off the top cover to fit regular DVDs on it.

i'd say it was. it's not a very sophisticated anti-piracy system, but just making piracy inconvenient deters a lot of would-be pirates.
piracy on the PS2 was comparatively easy, and the Xbox security was so lax it might as well have come pre-modded from the factory.

I feel like those mini-DVDs were more durable than the full size ones on the PS2. GameCube load times seemed to be faster than on PS2, though I don't know how multiplats peform in that area.

Yes, I believe it was. Nobody knows (knew, especially) you can even buy those little discs or that you can cut a bigger discs down. A very small percentage of people are motivated enough to get past the rest of the anti-piracy. This discussion is about a quarter century after the fact and probably most of the anons here were in diapers when the GC came out. Preventing "theft" is largely a matter of reducing convenience and opportunity. It's why locks work even though it's "easy" to pick a lock.

Piracy is pretty gay to be honest. It's the kind of thing they do in third world shitholes where people will also steal from and scam anyone and everyone. Growing up I don't remember anyone pirating games. Breaking the security is interesting from a technical standpoint though.

It had absolutely nothing to do with piracy, and was instead an effort to do the minimum amount of work to make a DVD-like format that's technically legally not actually a DVD so that Nintendo could avoid paying patent royalties to Sony
They did the same thing with the Wii discs where they actually figured out a way to make them full-size, and the WiiU which actually had slightly more effort put into making their I Can't Believe It's Not Bluray discs.
The most obvious flaw in the anti-piracy argument is that the disc drives in the Gamecube and Wii can still read standard DVDs just fine and all the copy-protection is at the software level. It wouldn't even have taken that much effort to do mechanical adjustments to make reading regular DVDs entirely impossible.

The changes made to the format for Gamecube discs are extremely minor and have absolutely nothing to do with the physical size or any anti-piracy feature as even things like the Burst Cutting Area are standard though rarely used DVD features.

True. I soft-modded my Wii nearly a decade ago and was SHOCKED how few games are actually worth playing on GameCube. I only ended up playing Twin Snakes, which was inferior to the original game on PS1. If Resident Evil Remake and Zero didn't get ported then I would have played those as well as GameCube titles though. I don't understand why the GameCube console is so expensive when the Wii is basically a Super GameCube and it can do virtually everything a GameCube can and more.
