Castlevania also came out a few months after GnG sold a million copies on Famicom. Just enough time to see that it's topping the sales chart before starting on making the game.
Castlevania is obviously a GnG clone except that for the theming they mixed Vampire Hunter D with Hammer films. The only reason why nobody's picking up on this in this day & age is because Castlevania is still relevant while Capcom completely fucked and gave up on the GnG series in the mid 90's (even when they tried to revive it on PS2 they didn't even use the GnG name). It's also been largely forgotten how big of a deal and influencial GnG was, it's a corner of action-platforming.
