Akira Kitamura has opened a blog on patreon detailing his career as well as lent his personal design documents for Rock Man to Capcom to display in their museum and to host on their sites.

I think this whole thing is an attempt to set the record straight. But I don't know if patreon blogs is the best approach: videos or books would be better. It'd be neat if he just wrote a proper book on the subject (in both Japanese and English).

And another misconception. Astro Boy got an English release, which is why people picked up on the simarities, but Cashern and Tokusatsu remained in Japan, so people missed out on the rest. The first two MM games are much more Tokusatsu influenced than anime-manga.

AK is the only one talking about MM1's development and the origins. The rest of the dev interviews are about changes or new characters in the sequels.

And likewise, the original idea was much closer to Ninja Captor, but it is hard to realize on the FC and may be too close a direct copyright violation.

Matsushita's big contributions are creating the engine, suggesting a color change mechanic, and to create the two sprite technique for Mega Man and make the sprite more detailed than is possible in other games.

Was this artwork by him? I didn't know Kitamura drew the designs, too.

Everything on the design document was by him.
Perhaps his return might be the reason why the document got released to the public.

He says his first job was with a marketing agency, so his background is in advertisement. He's an artist, but didn't train formally, so Inafune was given the job of formal cover and promotional artwork.

Out of his original 8 prototype Robot boss deisgns, only 3 made it into the final game. Bondman and Oilman were cut outright, Bubble man was redesigned as Ice Man, and Bomb Man and Elec Man were redesigned. Guts man's iconic design is all him.
