No, it does support 480p widescreen. Tourist Trophy and one of the late Gran Turismos have 1080i modes which are kind of wild.

Get over its framerate issues and its high difficulty curve and it's a racing game unlike any other. Play on manual too. There was a later revision that contains numerous improvements but is also a total rebalance in terms of control and difficulty.
